"C'mon, Chantelle. You've got a case to solve, Chantelle." The woman mutters to herself, hoping the quiet mantra will be enough to get her out of bed.But the fact that she was up late last night paired with the crappy weather she can hear outside makes that task incredibly difficult. She adjusts her bonnet, pulling the covers higher over her body. Just five more minutes.
But before she can get even one more minute, her phone starts ringing obnoxiously. She groans, rubbing her eyes and picking up the buzzing device from the nightstand. Once Chantelle realizes who it is, she clears her throat before accepting the call.
"Detective Taylor." Her voice is still groggy with sleep but she tries to sound as professional, and awake, as possible.
"I have important news about your Jeon case." The words of her lieutenant instantly make her sit up in bed, eyes growing wide.
Chantelle has been working on this case for about a week now but lately it has been at a standstill. All the early leads they had quickly dried up and she was left with nothing much to go on. So the idea of an update makes hope glimmer in her chest.
Perhaps they pulled some fingerprints from the items they took from the crime scene? God, that would be amazing.
"What is it, lieutenant?"
"There's been another murder, Mrs. Jeon's son was found dead this morning."
Her stomach instantly twists into knots.
Two members of the same family murdered? All the hope Chantelle had that this case would soon be solved quickly deflates. The probability that the two incidents are unrelated is highly unlikely. Which means they might have a serial killer on their hands, someone who is specifically targeting the family.
"We need you and Detective Kim on scene as soon as possible."
"Right." Chantelle gulps. "I'll be right over."
After she hangs up the phone, Detective Taylor quickly hops out of bed and throws on her uniform. A dark grey suit with a blue dress shirt underneath. Then she brushes her teeth and slicks her hair down into a low bun, not having the time or patience to do much else.
Before she leaves, she makes one last pit stop in her room to check on her pet bunny. Chantelle bends down next to the cage only to see that Cinnabun is curled up on himself, still sleeping.
She smiles softly, getting up slowly as to not disturb him. The brown and white bunny has enough food and water to last him until she comes home later tonight, so he should be fine.
Now that he's taken care of, she's ready to go. Chantelle secures her handgun in the holster around her waist and then exits her apartment.
When she arrives on scene, she is annoyed to see that the weather has not gotten any better. It's still drizzling in Manhattan, the sky as gloomy as ever. What a wonderful day for a murder investigation.
