Chapter four

CHAPTER FOUR:  field trip

"I NEED EVERYONE'S PERMISSION SLIPS." A teacher spoke loud enough to be heard. "Sammy, please collet them."

Niklaus Swan had just gone to make sure Bella was okay, snapping his fingers in front of her face, then looking up. He caught sight of Jasper and Alice, Edward was next to them.

"Look at you, huh?" Mike was suddenly in front of the siblings. "You're alive."

"Bummer." Klaus snorted, joking but had received a look from both Bella and Mike. "Joking. Of course."

"I know, yeah." Bella nodded her head. "False alarm, I guess."

"Yeah. Um...now I wanted to ask you, you know, if," Mike hesitated. "you know, it's like a month away, but..."

Klaus felt a bit bad for the other boy, frowning as he heard Mike ask Bella to the prom.
Bella was starting at Edward.   "So, What do you think?"

"About What?" Bella asked, showing she had not been paying any attention.

"Do you want to go? To prom? With me?"

"Oh, I...prom. Dancing. Not such a good idea for me. Uh...I have something that weekend anyway. I'm going to Jacksonville that weekend."

"You can't go another weekend?" Mike asked.

Nicklaus rocked back and forth on the heels of his shows, awkward as he listened to the conversation. "Hey," he spoke. "I'm just gonna go on the bus." He muttered, walking away.

Klaus partly ignored the teacher. "...Compost is cool. Now, stuff that..."

He kept glanced up, then snapping his head away as it looked like Alice and Jasper has turned to face him. Stop looking at them, idiot.

Despite his own lecture, he glanced up again, only to see them already looking at him. His head snapped down, trying to force himself to pay attention as he felt his cheeks heat up in embarrassment.

You fucking dumbass. "Hey." A cheerful voice called out. His head turned, Alice and Jasper now stood next to him. "How are you?"

"Uh, I'm fine." He looked back up at them, clicking his tongue and tapping a rhythm against his thigh.

"Bella, Klaus," Eric said, holding a stick in his hands. "look. It's a worm." He laughed.

How fucking childish. "Bella," a voice called, fast paced footsteps behind the siblings. "we shouldn't be friends."

"You really should've figured that out a little earlier." Bella told Edward. "I mean, why didn't you just let the van crush me and save yourself all this regret?"

"Bella," Klaus sighed. "not liking someone and wanting them to die are to different things. You can not like someone and not want them to die. And you," Klaus pointed to Edward. "and your brother are both lying. We know that wasn't an adrenaline rush, or that you were right next to us."

"What, you think we regret saving you both?"

"I can see that you do." Bella responses. "I just...I don't know why. I don't know about Jasper and Klaus..."

"You don't know anything." Edward told her, glancing at Klaus. "Either of you."

"Hi." Alice's sweet voice spoke up as Klaus glared at Edward, stepping closer. He was to close to his sister. "Are you gonna be riding with us?"

"No, our bus is full." Edward walked into the bus.

"I'm gonna-" Klaus moves forward, only to be stopped as Bella grabbed his arm. He didn't see his Alice reached out, her suddenly grasping his hand. He immediately looked down at it.

"Klaus, calm down," Bella said. "it's okay."

Alice let go of Klaus's hand, who glanced at Jasper. "Fine, I won't cut his tongue out. Only, because he's your brother. And you saved you."

"Threats like that," Bella told him as they walked to the opposite bus. "are the reason people don't want to be your friend."
