It wasn't just the children having heard their mother saying she was tired of being pregnant.
Tom was in the middle of his fourth performance of Two Gentleman of Verona when he was interrupted by the director who had received a call from Diana Tom's mother.
"Excuse me, everyone. I'm so sorry. Tom has to leave there's a family emergency he needs to attend to." The director smiled broadly as he said, "Tom, you're about to be a father again!"
His standby was called in immediately and stepped onstage the moment Tom stepped off stage after apologizing with, "My wife needs me."
He was on the phone with his mother while he was changing into his street clothes when she informed him that Desai was being taken back to surgery. The baby was breach and could not be delivered as they had hoped. He fairly dove into the backseat of the car and informed the driver of where to go and to please get there as quickly as possible.
Once at the hospital he was directed to get suited up so that he could meet his new daughter and see his wife. Unlike the other children, this bundle of red screaming flailing arms and legs had a head full of dark hair and a set of lungs that rivaled an opera singer.
The nurse in the nursery gave him a sympathetic expression as she led him into the private room. "I'm so sorry, we've tried soothing her but she just will not settle."
"It's alright. I've heard babies cry before." He leaned down touching her gently. "My darling, things are not as bad as you think they are," he said as he reached down and picked up the tiny babe.
She locked eyes with her father and it was all over for the both of them. She became quiet and Thomas, well Thomas cried because she was the very image of her mother, whom, for reasons he didn't know yet, was still in surgery.
"Shhh, there, there, now, papa's got you. My goodness but you are beautiful. You look just like your mummy. I know you know this, but I want you to hear it from outside the womb; I love you, little one."
She only cooed and gurgled at him as she grasped one of his fingers and held on to it. He looked around for a chair and saw a rocker and took a seat as he continued to gaze at the newest edition of the Hiddleston Clan. Desai had not told him what she was going to name her she had only promised that he would love the name.
He was shocked when Dr. Sigh came in. "Tom, how are you? And how is this little girl doing?"
"Well, she seems to like her father she quieted down as soon as I picked her up. How is Desai? When can I see her? Is everything alright?" Something in the way Dr. Sigh was looking at him had him worried.
"She's is coming out of recovery and doing really well. When she fell –"
"Fell? I knew nothing about a fall."
"Because she refused to have anyone call you and made Diana promise not to. She was playing with the children and tripped over one of the walkers and broke her left arm. The pain from that injury is what sent her into labor." She motioned to the baby, "This little one was breach so a C-section was required. Desai, as I said, is just now coming out of recovery, doing fine and headed to a private room." She sighed heavily, "Unfortunately the pain medication she's on will not allow her to breastfeed. One of our best orthopedic surgeons performed the operation on her arm."
"She required surgery? How bad was the break? When may I see her?"
"It was a compound fracture and while he was working on her arm I was delivering this little one. They should have her and the crib set up by now. It's this way and you may also bring baby girl with you. Just cover her face as we walk."
