First Day of High School
My alarm clock went off and I let out a tired groan. I shut it off and opened my eyes. As I sat up, I recalled what today was. My eyes find the uniform on the hangar by the door. Once I put it on, I checked myself in the mirror. The black sweater vest and the grey skirt seemed standard. Given the temperature out, I opted for a tee shirt. While I could have donned the traditional blazer, I decided not to. I brushed my hair and went downstairs for breakfast.
I put a pot on the stove for some tea and buttered some toast. Over the years, I had grown accustomed to the emptiness. My parents had embarked overseas for work and wouldn't be back for a long time. They trusted me to keep the house in order. I didn't have any siblings to worry about and was able to freely move.
My phone went off and I opened it seeing a message from Kuroo.
Kuroo: Kenma and I are picking you up in 30min so we can make the train.
Me: Sounds good.
I could not hide my excitement. Today was my first day in high school. Unlike the past years, I wasn't alone. Since that chance meeting, Kenma, Kuroo and I had become close friends. The pair were quiet and while we were each busy in middle school, we made time for each other. I had even gone to some of their middle school volleyball games.
When the time for high school exams came around, the three of us made a pact to go to the same high school. Kuroo was a year older and was at Nekoma High so it was a no brainer which high school I planned to go to.
As for my parents, they had instantly took a liking to Kenma and Kuroo. They invited them to dinners almost once a week when they were in Japan. Once they left the country for work, they told Kuroo and Kenma to look after me and I them.
I drew my attention to the front door when a knocking sound was heard. I took a deep breath and opened it to see Kuroo and Kenma. Kenma had dark bags under his eyes most likely from staying up late playing video games.
"You ready?" He asked me.
I nodded my head, taking a slice of my bread, "Almost."
After eating, we were sitting on the quick train ride that would take up to Nekoma High. I had only been there a few times when Kuroo had a volleyball game. The school was big and had a large student population.
Kenma was playing his video game silently while Kuroo said, "As first years, you both have to choose a club to join. Kenma says he is going to join the volleyball club at Nekoma."
"That's my plan too," I grin, "I can't let Kenma and yous practices go to waste."
Kuroo chuckled, "Of course not."
We got off the train and walked to the school. As I stood at the entrance, my eyes became saucers as I took in the size of the campus.
It was bigger than I had anticipated. People were everywhere and I felt like I was trapped in the ocean. The choppy waves were making hard to keep my head above water.
Kuroo had walked to a group of boys who I recognized as being on the volleyball team. He had dragged Kenma along with him and I took a deep breath and stepped inside the school.
It was just as busy and I felt my body stiffen. The way I looked at things, I felt much like the ugly duckling in a sea of swans.
"Ayame!" I heard Kuroo call out to me.
I turned to face him and he placed his hands on my shoulders, "Take a deep breath."
I did so. Kuroo seemed to always know what I'm thinking and could also bring me back down if I was feeling overwhelmed. He knew me better than I knew myself. Seeing I had calmed down, he gave me a lazy smile, "There, better?"
