I entered the cafeteria and saw that Kuroo wasn't there. I let out a deep sigh of relief. That gave me some time to think of a way to tell them what I had done.
The cafeteria was a decent size with tables spread out all around. Students were engaging in conversations or trying to study. They had found their groups and I desperately searched for an empty table. I found one by the window and took a seat.
It wasn't that I was hated by other students, but more so I found it harder to open up to others. I didn't see Naomi anywhere. The smell of my lunch drew my attention back to the container of food in front of me. My stomach growled in anticipation and I quickly gave thanks before eating.
I was taking a bite of my rice when Kuroo and Kenma sat beside me. I didn't fail to notice the students watching out of the corner of their eyes as the volleyball captain sat with the loner instead of the volleyball team.
I lifted an eyebrow, "Aren't you guys going to eat with the volleyball team?"
"We're not going to leave you on your own on your first day here," Kuroo teased, "Where would the fun be in that?"
I smiled and noticed Kenma playing his video game, "Did you beat the level?"
Kenma shook his head and I replied, "I'm sure you will."
"How was your first day of classes so far?" Kuroo asked me.
"It's good," I answered plainly.
Kuroo nodded his head at my answer, "By the way, did you hand in your application for the girl's volleyball club?"
I nodded my head, "I handed in an application..."
If I didn't say that, Kuroo would probably catch onto my lie too easily. Thankfully, I had gotten away with it.
Kuroo smiled at me while I saw Kenma glance up from his video game. He was silent, but the look in his eyes said he did not believe me. My body tensed at the silent message he tried to convey and I tried to redirect the conversation towards him, "So, Kenma, you joined the boy's team?"
He nodded his head, "Yeah."
Kuroo was happy, "Kenma is going to be the team's setter."
"Setter?"
"The one who tosses the ball to the spikers for an attack," Kuroo reminded me.
"Oh, right," I nodded my head.
"It was the only position where I didn't have to move around as much," Kenma explained his reasoning.
I shouldn't be surprised, I thought, Kenma was always more so brains over brawn.
"I'm guessing that practice is starting after school?" I asked Kuroo who nodded his head, "It'll be an exciting year."
"Ayame!" I heard Naomi's voice calling to me.
Kuroo glanced over at the approaching girl curiously.
"Naomi," I greeted quietly, "Is everything okay?"
Naomi nodded her head, "Everything is fine. I just can't get over how excited I am that we'll be in the same club. Aimi-senpai says that the team will meet out on the track field after school. So, I'll meet you in the club room."
She left before I could say another word and that's when I knew that my ship was slowly sinking. Kuroo looked at me with a confused face, "Track field? Didn't you hand in your form for the volleyball club?"
"Actually..." I took a deep breath and told them both the truth.
Kenma didn't look up from his game and remained silent. Kuroo's face had gone cold as his hazel eyes flickered with shock. The tension grew between us and Kuroo frowned, "You joined the track and field club?"
