The scrimmage games the next day were entertaining to watch. Karasuno was losing every single set they played. My heart went out to them for having to so so many penalties. They had grit, I had to give them that. I took a drink of water and heard the whistle blow. We were facing Fukurōdani and saw us we had lost the set 22-25.
"Come on," Kuroo said, "You got to do a penalty too."
I groaned and glared at Bukutō who grinned my way. I flew forward on the ground and overheard some players whispering.
"Why is she doing them?"
"Is she Nekoma's manager?"
"She's so cute."
"Damn look at her go, think I can get her attention?"
"Kuroo," I said in a voice laced with annoyance, "Aren't you supposed to be leading us ie. in the front?"
I stood up and waited for Kuroo to be beside me before resuming. We finished our lap and I looked at Kuroo, "You know, sometimes I think you want to lose."
Kuroo ruffled my hair, "While it is nice to see you train, I don't like to lose either."
He looked over at the other teams playing, "The teams are much stronger this year."
"But so are you guys," I commented, "The group chemistry is only getting stronger. I wish the girls team did this."
Our team wasn't as close as the boys team was. I knew I had a strong bond with most of the team excluding Etsuko. I wasn't sure what I had done to get under her skin, but whenever I tried to ask, she would storm off.
I gestured to the court where all the players were either warming up, doing penalty laps or playing a set, "Everyone here is determined to get better. It's refreshing to see."
Nekoma was playing Karasuno next and I took a seat beside Nekomata. Lev had just block Hinata and Kageyama's fast attack. The Karasuno players had looks of shock on their faces.
"All right Lev!" I congratulated him.
Lev impressed me even further when he performed a read block on Asahi's spike.
"Chance ball!" Yaku received the ball allowing Lev to score.
Karasuno called a timeout and I passed some water bottles to the boys.
"Nice job, Lev. You're definitely on the path to being an ace," I said to the first year to lighten up his spirits, "Yamamoto, you better start practicing."
"What?!" Our ace shouted and glared at Lev who had stars in his eyes, "Really Ayame, you really think so."
I nodded my head, "I do, but you got to keep it up. I don't want to do anymore penalties today."
After the timeout, Yamamoto attempted to do a spike when the setter covered it. Dachi set the ball to Asahi who was about to go spike it when I froze in my seat.
Hinata was jumping towards the ball with his arm poised to spike. The two collided and Hinata went flying to the ground. The ball bounced onto Karasuno's side of the court and everyone looked at Hinata.
"H-h-hold--" Asahi panicked thinking that he injured the first year.
"I'm sorry!" Hinata shot up and started bowing to the ace, "I was focused on the ball! I'm sorry! Are you all right? I'm sorry, I'm sorry!"
"I'm perfectly fine," Asahi tried to assure Hinata.
"Hey, be careful," Tanaka told Hinata.
"No matter what, Shoyo's the one that goes flying," Noya said.
