"No. If I could I would do it again." That was it. Their moment of peace was over. A look of revulsion filled Alev's eyes. The fire witch abruptly got up from where she was sitting.
Before she could register what was going on around her, Alev had punched Blaise in the face.
"What the hell are you doing?!" exclaimed Blaise, trying to push Alev off her. "Are you crazy, we're in the middle of the woods, the coven might hear!"
Alev let out a growl and kicked her, "You think I care? You're the one with tattoos, Yeniçeri, not me." Blaise tried to throw a punch, only resulting in the witch's elbow hitting her nose. The huntress watched her blood stained her white tunic and winced.
"You need me, your Matrone needs me. You can't let them find out I'm a huntress and even if you do, that snake queen will protect me." Alev let out an inhumane growl, knowing what the huntress said was true. She threw herself on top of her.
Blaise kicked her off and rolled to her side. Her blood dripped on the grass and she noticed Alev wasn't where she had last seen her anymore. "Stop this, Alev." she unsheathed her dagger and reached for the rope usually tied to her waist. I might have to kill her.
The Voice snickered. Right. You, a witchling, are going to kill a witch. I would love to see that without getting yourself killed in the process.
"Tell me why. Why is it that you see witches as barbaric, we've left you alone for centuries yet your kind is hellbent on killing every last one of us."
Her voice was coming from above. Blaise craned her neck and focused her gaze on the tall trees, watching, waiting for Alev to slip up and show herself.
"Where did you learn to hate witches because it sure as hell wasn't in Amavros."
Blaise growled. witch-hunting had been illegal since its first appearance in Amavros. The sovereigns of the country had understood the power they would have with even one witch by their side and had decided to take advantage of it by outlawing the hunt of witches.
They were revered and respected instead, given high-paying jobs and positions in The Council. Some became the advisors of the sovereigns and a few even managed to become rulers themselves, thus making sure witches would be protected when they were in Amavros.
"You and your kind only bring destruction and despair wherever you go. That's how it's always been. I pity the sovereign stupid enough to have created the law stating hunting witches is punishable by death." taunted Blaise. The witch she was facing got sloppy when she was angry and she'd take full advantage of that.
A few seconds passed and no peep came from Alev. Blaise continued to taunt the girl by insulting her craft, her coven and her friends, taunting her by threatening to kill them all when she had the chance.
Not even a moment later, she found herself under Alev with her bichwa dagger pressed to her throat. The witch smiled at her and traced the outline of Blaise's face with her dagger. "I'm going to say this once, and only once so listen closely."
The witch brought the dagger dangerously close to Blaise's eye, "You even think of harming anyone from my coven and I will kill you. I don't care if I die in the process, I will kill you."
Blaise was sure she would have died that night had it not been for Refia coming back from scouting for anyone who might be near the woods.
She immediately ran towards the two girls, her fury evident in her gaze. "What are you doing, salak! Get off her immediately!"
"Tell me why!" Suddenly she was on fire, her hair, her skin, her anarkali dress, its sleeves now an inferno as they tried to grab at Blaise. "You will tell me, huntress, and you will do it now!"
Her next actions were pure instinctual. The fire turned to ice before she could even blink and half of Alev's arm was now frozen.
The fire melted the ice which froze the flames, an endless cycle that continued until Refia stomped her foot so hard the ground shook. "Enough."
She grabbed both of their heads and knocked them together, "Act like children arguing over a doll, get treated like them." she growled and watched as the two girls rubbed their foreheads in pain.
"Now unless this is some kinky shit I interrupted, I would like to know why Alev was trying to slit your throat."
"Ask her, she's the one who attacked me!"
"I would, but she's literally on fire at the moment so I'm asking you."
Blaise let out a huff and continued rubbing her forehead, knowing a bruise would surely form in the middle of it in a few minutes. "It's none of your business."
"Actually it is, because you are under my responsibility which means I'll get skinned if you die." said the assassin, pinching the bridge of her nose.
Alev finally calmed down. The flames that engulfed her died down and a distraught expression replaced her wrathful one.
"She said she didn't regret killing Adi. He had a younger brother to look after, you know? They'd starve this winter without him if it wasn't for the coven." said Alev, her disgust in the huntress evident in her voice. She hastily wiped her tears away.
Blaise just shrugged. Though she still felt no guilt whatsoever, she didn't want to admit she had hesitated that fatal moment before she set fire to the hay the boy had stood on.
"That's not my problem." This time, Refia didn't hold Alev back as the witch threw herself on the huntress, pinning her hands above her head with one hand and choking her with the other.
"You're not doing the gods' work, Nehir, you're a murderer." her gaze emptied as though she was in a trance. Blaise fought to rip the witch's hands off her, kicked at her and tried to push her away as fast as she could.
Black dots danced in her line of vision and she felt the world around her sway. Her lungs were empty and the only thing she could see was Adi's face. The sight of the tears running down his cheeks, his screams as the flames devoured him whole. Adi, Adi, Adi, Adi.
He was everywhere and nowhere at the same time. A remnant of the past. Have you come to reap my soul, Adi? The boy's face twisted into a cruel smile.
It wasn't Alev choking her anymore, it was the boy she had burned. It was Adi's mother, screaming at her about how she had killed her son. It was his younger brother, crying because they would starve this winter.
Get out, get out, GET OUT! Adi's magic was etched onto her skin and his face haunted her dreams, plagued her every thought.
Enough,
Enough,
ENOUGH!
She was tired of seeing him everywhere, of hearing his screams every time she was in a quiet space. She clawed at Alev's hand with all her might. She would not die here at the hands of her enemy. She would not die without killing Carmilla Ernaline first. She would not die before making her peace with this!
The witch let go, suddenly out of her trance. Blaise felt her lungs fill with air. "I need you at the moment so I guess I'll have to wait until you've served your purpose." she stroked Blaise's throat possessively, bloodlust filling those golden-brown eyes of hers.
"Your life belongs to me, huntress, don't you dare forget it." Fear gripped at Blaise as she rubbed her throat, struggling to breathe without feeling like her lungs were on fire.
By the time Alev got off her, Blaise had already scrambled away from the witch. Alev wiped the blood off her dagger, all while keeping eye contact with the huntress. "I'll see you at home, Nehir."
