We ventured down to the river bed soon after I had awakened. The Clan Mother had me follow close behind her while walking from the village into the woods.
“Clan Mother.” I spoke softly as we walked, branches crunching quietly beneath our feet.
“Yes my child?” She did not take the time to simply look over her shoulder to me, striding ahead of myself.
“Does my father know I am to leave with Ratonhnhaké:ton?” It had been a question i'd been meaning to ask her, fearful of what he'd think since I hadn't been with him since that morning of the day before.
Finally she stopped, turning to acknowledge my question. A small smile was on her lips as she nodded, “Your father – our brave warrior – has known of this day since before you were born, my child.”
“Well, and what of my mother; had she known as well?” My question seemed to faze the Clan Mother and I felt it was a question she was not prepared to have heard nor answer.
“Your mother is the reason you are going with Ratonhnhaké:ton.” She took her staff – beaded along the sides and artwork of our people amongst its surface – and walked towards me.
“There is so much I should have told you, my little bird... my child.” There was no sadness in her voice, only wisdom.
“What do you mean?”
The Clan Mother only shook her head, “You will soon find out.” With that she turned and began back down the path, birds chirping songs softly above in the trees with joy while all I felt was confusion, questions flying at rapid speeds within’ my mind.
“Ah, there he is.” The Clan Mother finally spoke once we reached the river bed that lead into a lake nearby, sand and grass beginning to mend together as the trees began to thin out until it was an open space leading to the large cliff above, gracing the smoky sky with its color -.
As we walked down to the water, Ratonhnhaké:ton sat upon the sand, using a stick to engrave something into the white mix of minerals and rocks. We quietly approached him and his head turned to look over his shoulder.
“Where Ratonhnhaké:ton? Where have you seen that symbol?” The Clan Mother asked, looking from myself to him.
“The spirit showed it to me. Said I would meet a man who could show me the way forward.”
She motioned for me to sit at Ratonhnhaké:ton’s side as she did. “Hm.” She made the soft humming noise. “We are sworn to protect this place… but you are right as well. The world is changing, and we cannot hide forever.”
I sat in silence while I watched their exchange of words. “I will not sit here and wait for our end.”
Ratonhnhaké:ton spoke with truth and I looked to them both. “I will neither. It’s time we do something.”
Ratonhnhaké:ton smiled and I felt relief flood through me as the Clan Mother nodded to us both. “Then I release you. You may leave.”
There was silence before I spoke up, “Why have you changed your mind?”
The Clan Mother looked between Ratonhnhaké:ton and myself, “Because I cannot change yours.”
She reached to her side and handed both Ratonhnhaké:ton and myself two mats. “Take these.” She said. “You will find what you seek in the east. It was there I saw the symbol. It was borne by a man who will surely help you, as he once helped both of your mothers.”
The mention of our mothers stung me deeply but we both managed to stand to our feet. “Thank you.” We said in unison as we stood with the Clan Mother.
“Yours is a noble heart, Ratonhnhaké:ton, and yours a kind one, Canada. But I fear you both expect too much.” She looked to us both with an encouraging smile. “Go. Seek your symbol. Find your way.” With this, the Clan Mother left Ratonhnhaké:ton and myself there at the water's edge, watching as she left back up the path she and I had walked.
“It seems our adventure starts now.” I joked with Ratonhnhaké:ton. He laughed at this, shoving me playfully before we turned and began walking down along the waterline.
I took one last glance over my shoulder and could discreetly make out the Clan Mother’s figure as she returned to our village. To the safety of our village.
