I'm sorry

Aiden

On the way home, Harlow and I argued. I didn't mind. I would rather argue with her than listen to some hoe. I dropped her off at home. Damien and Ramona threw confetti at her when she opened the door. I laughed.

I headed home and pulled into the driveway. I got off my bike and went inside. Mom was sitting at the kitchen table with her chin in her palm. I walked over to her and crouched in front of her. She looked at me, then cried. I wrapped my arms around her.

My mom wasn't a terrible person. The events that happened years ago led us to my dad. My dad gives a shit about us.

"I'm sorry."

My mom let go of me and wiped her eyes. "I'm sorry, too."

"It wasn't your fault."

Mom furrowed her brows.

"You protected me. I can't fault you."

"I never wanted you to suffer. You're everything to me."

"But I didn't."

Mom looked at me.

"I had people who loved me and have people who love me now. Mi Familia."

My mom's brows raised as she made an o with her mouth.

"Family are the ones who love and protect you. They teach you how to love. They spend time with you."

My mom smiled. No matter what I do or where I go, a son's first love is their mom.

My mom hugged me as the front door opened. I didn't need to ask who it was. He came into my life when I was ten months old and never left.

Harlow

I sat at the table wearing a party hat as my parents celebrated me skipping school. My parents are weird.

I removed the party hat and set it on the table. "Can you stop having a party?"

"Oh, Hunny, relax. Most kids would be happy," Mom said.

"But most kids' parents scold them. You threw me a party."

"We want to support you," Dad said.

"Then say good job when I get a good grade."

"Okay, good job."

I wrinkled my nose. What?

"So, why did you skip school?" Mom asked.

"Aiden and his mom got into a fight. Something about his grandparents and a lie."

My parents' smiles disappeared.

"What?"

My parents gave each other a look.

"Why are you giving each other looks?"

"Because there's something you should know," Dad said.

Now what?

*******

I sat at the table, scratching my head.

"I know it's a lot of information to learn," Dad said.

"You gave me the bridge addition of your relationship. It included grandfathers who hated you. One grandmother skipped town while the other drank. Mom played who's the daddy, as did Aiden's Mom. Innocent people got killed because a psycho thought it was a grand idea."

"Well, when you put it that way, it sounds terrible."

I arched a brow.

"If you're upset, we understand," Mom said.
