Aiden
I told Harlow to pack light since we were taking my bike. Most girls don't listen, but she did. I pulled behind the cabin. We got off the bike and grabbed our stuff. Then I cover my bike. Dad told us to keep our bikes hidden when we came here. Few people knew about the cabin.
I unlocked the door, and we entered. Harlow took her bag to a room. I traveled light, so it didn't matter.
Harlow came out of the room.
"Did you need anything?"
"Food would be nice."
I removed a rug and lifted a door on the floor. Harlow followed me down into the basement. I flicked on a light to reveal canned goods.
Harlow pointed at the shelves. "Why are there canned goods?"
"Our parents stock the cabin in case there are issues."
"Our parents are weird." Harlow walked over and picked up a jar of pickles. "I'm not sure how pickles fit into the equation."
"People like pickles."
Harlow put the jar back. Then she lifted a freezer lid. "Well, we have enough food to last a century."
I chuckled.
"Do you know anything about cooking?"
"I know enough." I shrugged.
Harlow grabbed a pack of hot dogs and tossed them to me. "Well, you can make hot dogs."
"We need buns, and these are frozen."
Harlow rolled her eyes and snatched the package out of my hands. "Let me show you how it's done." She climbed the steps as I followed her, then went over to the sink and ran cold water over the frozen got dogs. "Cold water thaws frozen meat without spoiling it. Since hot dogs are preprocessed meat, it doesn't take long for them to cook."
"Where did you learn about cooking?"
"My parents taught me. What about you?"
"My mom taught me a few things, so I don't starve. Since you're thawing the hot dogs, I'll get a fire started." I left the cabin and went out back to collect wood for the fire pit. I tossed logs into it and added kindling so the fire would smolder.
The fire gained momentum until flames appeared. I sat in a chair and stoked the fire, making sure the wood burned. A few minutes later, Harlow brought out the hot dogs, two long forks, and handed one to me. She took the order fork and stabbed her hot dog with it, then cooked it over the fire.
"I'm surprised you're cooking your own food."
"Why? Is there a hidden rule that says a guy must cook my food over a fire?"
"No, but most girls think that way."
"I never understood that mentality. But then again, most girls care more about themselves than others."
"Is that why you don't have female friends?"
Harlow turned her hot dog, so it didn't burn. "No. Most girls fit in with a group. I have no idea where I belong."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I follow the rules, but my dad is a bad boy. My mom works in a bar. I'm not into sports or cheerleading. I can't play an instrument to save my life. I don't spend hours in front of a mirror. So, I don't know where I belong." Harlow shrugged.
"You belong where you should belong."
"That makes no sense."
"It means you were born to stand out and not fit in."
