Harlow
I picked out a casual knee-length dress. Why wear a fancy dress? Most girls would wear sequence dress or formal dress to homecoming. I wasn't one of those girls. To me, homecoming was about attending an event and faking a gleeful facade. Oh, God, I sound like my parents.
Someone tapped on my bedroom door. I glanced at Mom as she strolled over to my bed.
"Well, that's a nice dress."
"I didn't want to wear my funeral clothes."
Mom arched her brow. "When have you ever attended a funeral?"
"I haven't. But knowing Dad, I might attend Aiden's untimely death."
Mom snickered. "Your dad worries about you. I told him it's futile."
"You impress me with your fancy words."
Mom rolled her eyes. "I know words. You have no faith in me."
"You fight with Dad over ice cream."
"It's our thing." Mom shrugged.
"It's bizarre."
"It's bizarre because you haven't experienced the joys of a relationship. You date someone and discover they steal your ice cream."
I shook my head. My mom smiled.
"Can I ask you a question?"
"You can ask me anything."
"What made you fall in love with Dad?"
Mom pushed her lips to the side. "He risked his life for me."
"What do you mean?"
"Let's sit." Mom sat down on the bed, and I joined her. "My dad ran a rival club against Richard's club. There had been bad blood between the clubs before I came along. When I became friends with Elise, my dad agreed not to retaliate."
"This might be a stupid question. But why not?"
"Because my dad had some weird idea of fatherhood. He thought his action would endear me to him."
"Did it?"
"Hell, no! I couldn't stand my dad."
I arched my brow. My mom was weird. She left the room so I could get ready. I showered, dressed, and dried my hair.
I came downstairs to find Aiden sitting on the couch waiting for me. He saw me and stood up. I strolled towards him.
"Ready?"
I nodded. We started for the front door. Then I stopped and pivoted on my heels. I walked over to my dad and threw my arm around his neck. Dad wrapped his arms around me. "Have a nice time, baby girl."
"I will. I love you, Dad."
Dad released me. I hurried over to Aiden, and we left for our date.

DamienI stood there as the front door closed behind Harlow and Aiden. Ramona rubbed my back.
"Is it wrong that I don't want Harlow to grow up?"
"No."
"I want to keep her small and close to me."
"Damien."
I looked at Ramona.
"It doesn't matter how old Harlow is. You're still the first man she loved."
I knitted my brows.
"But sometimes, you need to allow another man to love your child."
I nodded. It isn't easy to let go of your child so that another man will love them. Ramona and Harlow were my worlds. If anything happened to them, it would shatter my world.
