"childhood? what childhood? the one that didn't last? the one in which i learned to be afraid?"

chapter four

The next morning starts the same.

Wake up from a nightmare around five, wait around until it's time to wake up Shoto, walk to school scowling at the ground. Noa has a feeling this would become a routine. The two arrive early as usual, two or three students already there. When Noa sits down, the blonde a few seats over glances skeptically in her direction while she shoves her earbuds in and puts her head down. About ten minutes later, Jirou tapped her shoulder again to wake her up. This has got to be one of the most serious cases of deja vu she's ever experienced.

"This gonna be a thing from now on?" Jirou asks with a crooked smile. Noa nods and removes her earbuds, turning her attention to Aizawa, who is at the front of the room emerging from his sleeping bag.

"Your training will be later on today, behave yourselves until your next class starts." He tiredly explains as he inches towards the door. "Todoroki, a word?"

Noa and Shoto look at each other then back to Aizawa. He rolls his eyes. "Noa."

The stares from her classmates make her fidget in her seat as she nods, standing up to step outside. When the door is shut and the chatter of her classmates is muffled, Aizawa sighs and crosses his arms. Noa shifts under his gaze, feeling antsy because of the conversation that was bound to happen. The awkward silence breaks when he clears his throat.

"It's uh- it's been a while. You've grown up." He strains. His voice is softer than usual, and it surprises Noa a bit. She nods, willing him to continue. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.

"I'm sorry. For all those years ago when Endeavor came to take you under his wing. I should've tried harder and fought for you but I didn't. I know you're upset with me and if I could reverse time and change things I would, but I can't. So please, no hard feelings while you're in my class?"

What? What does he mean upset with him? He's Noa's favorite hero, of course she isnt upset. Christ, she even has that forsaken nightlight to help her sleep. She looks at him, eyebrows furrowed. His face is just how she remembers it, just worse under eye circles and more of a stubble on his chin. He still has the same grey eyes and black hair as her.

"I'm not upset with you." She assures. "And I'm not sure why you think I am. You tried, I remember that. There wasn't anything you could do."

He smiles sadly. "I assumed, when none of my letters were returned, that you- well- hated me."

Noa looks at him, dumbfounded. He..wrote her? He's been trying to contact her this whole time? Why hasn't she gotten any of them?

Her eyes narrow as realization dawns on her, and she purses her lips to fight back the anger bubbling in her chest. "I never got any letters."
