"i am every age i've ever been. all time ever does is pass and all i ever do is remember."

chapter 21

Concrete tastes awful.

That was the first thought on Noa's mind (besides the pain because fucking ow) as she felt herself falling.

Second, why the hell is one of the top pros here and why did he distract her mid-air?

Theres hardly any time to register that or the pain shooting through her entire body, because she isn't falling anymore.

She's flying.

"Shit. I really didn't mean for that to happen, kid. I'm sorry."

Oh right. Hawks. He was carrying her in his arms as he shot through the air.

After a few muttered curse words, he landed on the rooftop Noa would've made it to. As soon as he set her on the ground she rolled over onto her side, groaning in pain. Every breath in felt like it was cracking her ribs, and all of her limbs felt like they'd been put through a wood chipper.

Her head was the worst, though. A horrible, pulsating ache started to spread across her skull, and there was no telling how her face looked right now.

"Where does it hurt?"

She heard the hero's famous carefree tone of voice lace with worry as she forced her eyes open. Hawks' honey blonde hair hung over his glasses as he looked down at her.

"I just got a face full of building, dude. It hurts everywhere."

The hero laughed as Noa sat up, and she winced at how fast she moved.

"At least you can crack jokes. What's someone your age doing out this late anyway? It's dangerous."

Noa looks at him incredulously as she adjusts her mask (it was a miracle that thing stayed on this long)

"Someone my age? You started your own agency at 18 and you're already number three at 22 years old."

Hawks looks to the left, pursing his lips in amusement at the sharp tongue on this strange child.

"Touché, but you could still get hurt out here. It isn't safe."

Noa deadpans at him. "Right. Wouldn't want that."

"Right." The hero says with a nod and a bright smile, completely missing her point. She swats his arm lightly.

"I wouldn't have gotten hurt if you didn't throw your stupid feathers in my face! What did you think was gonna happen when you did that?"

"I don't know, what did you think was gonna happen when you decided to flee from the scene before the police arrived?"

Noa froze, just for a second. Why had Hawks of all people been there? One perv usually isn't enough to attract the attention of a top hero. Her teeth clenched, which made pain shoot up her jaw.
