"my skin is jagged and worn, as if i have lived thousands of lives in one body. i am flat. i am empty. this is all the world wanted for me."

chapter 9

The first thing Noa can register is the cold.

Dark, unrelenting cold; different than Shoto's ice, different than anything she's ever felt. Perhaps it's the blood loss, she thinks. The hazy memory from before of looking at her injured side before seeing Shigaraki stalking towards her plays in her mind and she flinches. Shigaraki- the boy from all those years ago, whom she never thought she would see again, who had grown into a childish man, attacked her class. Her teachers. Her friends.

Noa's fingertips grasp at whatever fabric was beneath her. She doesnt recognize it.

Where is she? Opening her eyes seems impossible at the moment. She inhales, forcing herself to concentrate on what she can hear, what she can feel. It's hard to focus when her thoughts are so loud, so demanding. A faint beeping noise slowly reaches her eardrums, fast but steady. It has to be a hospital. Please, please let it be a hospital. She hears the sound of a pencil tapping and scratching against paper. Slow, shallow breathing to the right of her.

She risks peeking open her left eye, and then the right, squinting against the fluorescent lights.

Heart monitor, tray tables with various metal instruments. An iv, a wristband with her name printed across it. A blonde nurse, scribbling down notes at the end of the bed. Pain. Stabbing, bruising pain in her left side. She holds back a groan as she uses one hand to press against her wound and the other to prop herself up.

Fuck.

She grits her teeth. This is definitely a hospital, but she's been in plenty of those as a child in All for One's captivity. She could be anywhere.

The nurse jumps. "Miss Todoroki! You need to lie down!"

Shoto snaps awake in his chair, immediately getting up and walking to her bed. She hadn't seen him there. He reaches her, looks at her with some emotion she couldn't place, and hugs her.

They've never hugged before. Shoto's never hugged anyone, ever. She stiffens for a moment, but very slowly hugs him back. All she remembers is Shigaraki stalking toward her, clutching his bullet-ridden hand. She lost consciousness, but somehow heard multiple gunshots before completely losing it. She squeezes her eyes shut, clenching her jaw as her hands fisted his shirt, then let go. Shoto stands.

"Don't do that."

"Excuse me?"

"Don't get shot."

"My bad, I'll let Midoriya die next time." She jokingly rolls her eyes. He looks horrified, giving her a small side eye.
