Song Rec. - Break It to Me Gently by Brenda Lee
-
About 15 minutes went by, the waitress had already cleared the table except for the fourth vodka seltzer I had ordered.
Only a couple who sat by the window were left in the bistro aside from myself.
I sat there thinking, sipping on the vodka for the simple thought that it would get me tipsy, throwing my money away for the effects of water.
A buzzing of my phone had me sit up from my chair, I pick it up and see Sam's contact displayed on the front of it.
I press the green button and hold it to my ear as I take another swig of my drink, the ice clinking once more as I set it down.
I swallow before speaking.
"Hello"
"Elena where are you?"
His voice suddenly boomed from the speaker, a serious tone as he asked.
"Just went for a late-night drink, Sam. No big deal."
He chuckles in annoyance through the phone.
"First of all, it's 5:45 in the morning and second, the last time you went out you almost got killed."
"Actually-" I pull the phone back and check the time-"It's 10:45 at night and I can handle myself."
The line is silent for a moment before I hear his voice again.
"You went to a different time zone to get a drink? Where?"
I shift in my seat as I tap my teeth together.
"Umm, well Brooklyn."
"What the hell."
At that, his voice faded, before returning full volume through the phone.
"You went back there the same night you nearly got killed? "
I roll my eyes and tuck the phone in-between my shoulder and ear.
He continues to rant on about me being careless as I walk over to the bar, handing them my card and paying for my bill.
I mouth a thank you and walk out of the bistro.
"Look I didn't want to go back to bed so I just went to get a harmless drink. Sam, I'm fine."
I turn the corner and walk into the alley, his voice continuing as I pull the phone away from where it was at and hang up.
I open a portal back into the hotel room and step through, ending up in the bathroom again.
Sam's voice came from the living room as I walk that way.
"She just hung up on me."
Sam's standing in the middle of the living room, Bucky sitting on the couch as he looked at him with raised eyebrows.
As I walk in Sam looks over at me, "you're ridiculous. You could at least let us know when you decide to take off."
He walks around to sit on the couch next to Bucky as I sit on the independent chair to the right of Sam.
I rest both my arms on each side of the chair, my body sinking into the cushion, causing my arms to be raised slightly higher than my chest.
"I'm not technically under your supervision, so I think during leisurely times I can leave when I please."
