Types 0f Bible Interpretation Models
Bible interpretation is the systematic way of studying the written text with the aim of unraveling the intention of the writer. What is important here is that texts are put into the context of usage, putting in mind that each style of writing is peculiar to every writer. Bible interpretation models are selected techniques generally used to study the bible. It is important to give a general overview of these models so that one could see other ways of bible interpretations beyond what is presented here.
The need to have interpretation is to get the right understanding of the bible. This boils down to the fact that the bible is a sacred book that needs not to be adulterated but carefully studied contextually. Also, it is believed that the bible is the book of conviction of faith of the Christians.
The following are some models of bible interpretation:
o Literal Interpretation
This type of model says that interpretation of the bible should be according to the status of the plain text and their historical context. This model belongs to the verbal interpretation of the bible, in that, as the texts are said so could their meanings vary. It believes that the diction of the bible is divine and thus constitutes the exact meaning of the writer. One of the leading figures in this model is St. Jerome. One of the weaknesses of this model is that it could not account for diverse styles of writing and differences in the allegorical usage of words that individually evoke meaning in themselves. o Allegorical Interpretation
Making different allusions to different things is prevalent in the bible. True, this is what is common to a typical literary text. And because the bible is one too, one could expect that some of the texts are figurative in usage. This model takes bible interpretation as levels. This means that what is written is in different levels of meaning. It takes a level of meaning as reference. This means that above the people, events, or situations described is a super meaning that determines what should be deduced from them.
The allegories are different characters with different roles that collectively determine the meaning of a given text. Some earlier practitioners of this model believes that it is the spiritual meanings of the persons, situations or events that bring about the allegorical meanings. Typical of this are the Ark of Noah, which has a physical but yet connotative implication of the world coming to an end, the characters of Old Testament being alluded in the New Testament as some foreshadowed ones, etc.
o Moral Interpretation
It is true that different ages with diverse cultures are found in the bible. As such, it is possible to have many ethics of different generations. In this type of model, bible interpretation is based on moral lessons drawn from the writings of the bible. This kind of model is prevalent in many school curricula. It believes that there are ethics passed across for every story written in the bible. Thus, bible meanings are moral lessons of the pages of historical facts.
The spotlight here is to interpret the bible using different allegories contained therein. In this way, a single actor in a story is seen not only as a literal person but as what connotatively contains diverse types of information that are important to the general meaning of the text.
o Analogical Model
This type of model seeks to provide interpretation for the bible by using what the plain text prefigures or relates to. The meaning of a text is championed on how much it is used to predetermine what will happen in after life. The total meanings of texts are geared towards a single goal in this model. This is whether the text says something about life after death. Then, other types of inferred meaning could be inferred from what has been concluded.
Another view to this type of model is that it discusses how human characters are used as analogies for further meaning creation. The meanings created are as parts of the analogies. For example, some people believe that to have Jesus, one needs to pay proper homage to Mary. This is because she contributes to the Jesus we have today by being scared enough to be indwelt by the spirit. Thus, Mary will mean an analogy of purity and convener of the divine.
PaRDeS Interpretation Model has not been discussed here because it is the chosen model. There are different advantages to selecting it as a model. One of the prevalent being that it helps to know the literal, allegorical and anagogical meaning of texts. It is not one-sided. The meaning of a text is not only literal but also symbolic. Even though this model tries to keep many models, it does not interpret the bible to be confusing. This is because different models that are incorporated are given credence in a systematic manner. This model suits the purpose for writing this book.
In this modern period, it is possible to see bible interpretation as an academic and philosophical pursuit. Although it is based on individual preferences, what is prevalent is that the models are not the utmost.
