Pronounced as: reh-mez'
Meaning – "Hint"
The Remez scripture interpretation is the next after the P'shat. It is a deeper form of Bible interpretation when compared with the P'shat. Remez, unlike P'shat, does not stay at the surface meaning of words, sentences or even verse. Rather, it notices a hint towards an implied meaning which was not explicitly stated in the P'shat reading.
An instance will be "The food is not on the table". If the background knowledge had shown that more than one person is found in the location of the table on which the bread is placed, Remez interpretation might infer that the food was stolen. Notice that this was not mentioned in the origin text. However, a hint at a deeper meaning is what Remez gives.
Furthermore, "The two months old baby has been fed", in Remez interpretation will suggest that the baby just had milk – being breastfed. That's a hint, since that is the only thing a two-month-old baby can have at that age. This is what the Remez interpretation is like.
Remez scripture interpretation using Bible examples:
a. Genesis 3:21 - The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
Remez meaning: With major interest in garments of SKIN, we can infer using the Remez interpretation that the garment of skin is from an animal which must have been slain.
b. Gen 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
Remez meaning: putting focus on Adam KNEW Eve, we can infer from other parts of the text using the word CONCEIVED that the knowing is of pregnancy.
