Onosecond

The moment after you've done something stupid, is called an onosecond. Nick knew that because he was a smart kid, at least he liked to think so.

An onosecond is that second after you've done something bad or embarrassing, when it's done and realisation hits in. The onosecond is the thing that makes you lie awake at night with horrible guilt for whatever you did 3 years ago. It's the moment when your stomach drops and all you can say is "oh no". It's the message you sendt to the wrong person, that typo that made you call your mother a hoe, the time you spilled a secret you thought the person already knew. Or for Nick the time you kiss your very straight best friend.

He didn't know how it happened, one second they were playfully fighting on the floor, and the next their lips melted together, but Luke wasn't kissing him back. Then he felt two strong arm push him away with such a force his head hit the headboard behind him.

Luke didn't even spare him a second glance, just made his way out of Nick's room running down the stairs and getting in his car. Nick watched it all from his bedroom window. After the tears had stopped falling from his eyes and the ones that already slipped had dried leaving visible trails on his face he turned on his pc.

However he didn't play any games, or try to reach Luke, he wondered what this feeling was and he came across the onosecond. He spent hours reading trough all the websites he could find on the onosecond. After a few hours he took a break to laugh, reading about a feeling to escape it, ironic.

His mother had tried getting him away from the pc, but to no avail. He didn't even come down to eat dinner. He ended up locking himself in his room for a week. He never saw Luke again. There was a year between them so Luke was going to college that year either way.

They had talked a lot about how they would continue their friendship over the distance, but now all that planning was gone, there was no more stealing alcohol from their parents, smoking weed in the bathrooms. No more sudden road trips from Texas to California. There was no more friendship, no more time spent together.

They went seperate ways, starting new friendships in hope that one might be able to replace te one that was. However no one came near, no one could fill that eternal hole left in their hearts, and all Nick can think about is how he could have avoided it all. If he just didn't kiss his best friend. If he just said it was a dare he got from a friend. If he just kept his feelings in the dark, if that onosecond never happened. If he had just the smallet bit of self control.

He was pulled out of his thought spiral by a notification on his phone. It was Clay, one of his old internet friends, they moved in together half a year ago. He asked if Nick was okay, he told Clay he was fine, but was he really?

No he was not, how was he supposed to act, like nothing had happened? Should he say sorry? It had been 3 years, there was no way Luke still was mad at him? Right?

The thought spiral was back, but Nick tried to shake it off. He was streaming when Luke first messaged him. His whole chat wondered what had happened, why he was so shocked. He almost ended stream right that second.

He didn't, but he answered Luke's message instantly. His chat could wait for a second. After that they talked a few seperate times, but it was weird. So they agreed to meet up in real life, they both lived in Florida, Luke in college, Nick with Clay.

Luke said he would pick him up at the buss station, Nick was 10 minutes early so Luke didn't have to wait for him. Then Luke came 2 minutes too early, making Nick slightly hopefull. They had both arrvied early, that must mean something right? "Hey" He said as he opened the car door. "Hey" Luke said nonchalantly, like he wasn't just meeting someone that had been such a big part of his life. "So where are we going?" Nick asked, he was nervously fiddleling with his hands, but Luke was too busy with the road to notice.
