_____

Dream's steps were pounding against the dusty ground. His heartbeat seemed to quicken with every shaky breath he took. He knew he was close, there was only a little left until he found the familiar path up the hill to the observatory that had been his home for months.

He didn't know how long it had been since he started running, but the sun was slowly setting, turning one side of the sky in a cornwall blue, while the other was a burst of warm colors. It would've been beautiful if he wasn't running for his life.

Behind him he could hear the hoard, their groaning voices telling him they were out for blood. His blood. The virus that took over their bodies after mere seconds of their death controlled their minds. Telling them to find anything alive and kill. It would do anything to spread further.

Dream didn't feel remorse for the zombies, they were dead after all. The virus could only take over dead bodies. It could infect living ones, but had to kill them before it could take control. That's why Dream and his fellow survivors all wore oxygen masks while outside.

Full hazmat suits would've been better, but sadly that's not a thing they sell at your local hardware store.

The hoard was feet behind him when he slammed the gate in their dead faces. The last thing he saw was cold pale fingers reaching out before the door automatically locked. Thanks to Sam's expertise they were able to make a chamber that rinsed the air for the virus.

Once the cleansing was over Dream quickly threw open the gate. He managed to close it before his feet collapsed, the adrenaline left his body.

He didn't notice his friends arriving before someone took his shoulder and shook him hard. "Dream!" George yelled, crouching in front of his taking off the oxygen mask so he could look at Dream properly.

"Are you okay?" George asked in a softer voice, yet worry was lacing his every word. They could hear two pairs of steps coming towards them as Karl and Sapnap skidded to a halt. Sapnap's face morphed to one of confusion. "Where's Punz" he asked.

Dream's eyes were sorrowful as he looked at Sapnap. "Where is he Dream?" he asked. Dream could feel his heartbeat quickening again. "Dream, don't fuck with me. Where is Punz" he asked his voice steadily getting louder. "I- we lost each other when the crowd of zombies broke into the store. We were in each our end, they went for him first. I-I barely had time to get out myself. I wanted to stay and help him, but more and more zombies came" Dream stayed silent. Waiting for a word from his best friend, but no words came.

Sapnap just turned around and went back to his room. The others tried comforting Dream saying it wasn't his fault, but he could still feel the survivor's guilt bubbling up from within. The group had just gotten ready to move away from the gate to do their tasks and get Dream to the infirmary when Sapnap came back. He had a pillow and blanket in one hand and a bag in the other. He sat down on the hard limestone floor against a wall that at all times surveyed the front gate.

Dream opened his mouth to say something but George put a hand on his shoulder. Dream turned around, looking into the heterochromatic eyes of his other best friend. The look said "leave it" so that's what he did. With one last look at Sapnap, he followed George to the infirmary.

"I know it's hard for you to hear this, but it's not your fault okay," George said as he bandaged up Dream's left arm. On the way back he got scraped up on a concrete wall. "I know... I just didn't want Sap to go through the same things I did. Losing someone you love is painful. No one should have to experience it as many times as we" Dream said grunting as George tied the bandages tight.
