When you have one friend and one friend only. It's a stupid idea to fall for that one friend.

At least that's what Luke experienced when he at 16 years old fell in love with his childhood best friend.

Nick and Luke had been best friends since birth. Nothing could separate them as kids. Growing up in neighbouring houses they were always allowed to play with each other. After all it was only a trip trough the broken fence.

When they grew up it started becoming clear that Luke didn't fit in. While all the other boys had play fights, pretending to be famous boxers, or playing soccer (to my fellow Europeans I'm so sorry) Luke climbed up the tallest trees on the playground pretending he climbed Mount Everest and stood looking over the world.

He would always get scolded by a grown up afterwards, but that didn't matter to him, he still did it again and again.

None of the other boys managed to get up into the tree, but they didn't want to admit it so they just kept playing on the ground. Nick however tried his best multiple times to get up in the tree. Sometimes he succeeded, other times he didn't. When he did, they made their world into a perfect little bubble existing only in the tree tops. Where no one could reach them. It was safe, even if one wrong step meant falling down.

However sometimes Nick would rather play with the other boys. Luke on the other hand, didn't like them. They were too loud for his liking.

That didn't matter though. Because Luke had Nick, and as long as Nick was there, Luke was happy. They didn't have to hang out all the time of course. Sometimes it went weeks without them talking, Luke lost in his own little world, Nick off making new friends or at the football field playing with whoever else was there.

Luke never felt threatened by Nick's new friends. He knew none of them would ever replace him. He was right of course, but along the line it wasn't always as perfect.

They were in 5th grade at the time it happened. Nick had gotten a girlfriend, and for the first time in his life, Luke felt betrayed by his best friend. Because Luke wasn't the first person Nick broke the news to. He was the last actually. Usually when Nick had something important happening in his life he'd run straight to Luke and tell him right away.

Not this time though. Nick had pulled each and every one of his friends aside during break. They all came back smiling and looking smug. As more and more of them came back they gave each other knowing looks. Luke was the last person Nick told, and it felt really bad.

That's when he first started becoming scared of loosing his best friend. Afraid his best friend didn't see him as his best friend too.

He started noticing how long it started taking between each time the hung out. How Nick forgot to tell him important things like when he broke up with his girlfriend or when he got a new cat.

Luke didn't really feel like he was part of Nick's life anymore. Well that was until one of Nick's "friends" got together with his ex-girlfriend. Who would've thought something stupid like that would bring them together again.

It didn't matter. Luke was back in Nick's life. He was Nick's number one again, his go to buddy, his best friend. That was all he wanted.

Then it all changed. When Luke was 15 he started noticing his lack of friends. How empty his contact list was, how few snaps he actually got. How the only person to hang out with him was Nick. How he was never invited to parties, he only came along as Nick's plus one.

It was all so very clear when he first paid attention. Except for Nick no one there was actually his friend. Anywhere he went he was just Nick's plus one. This wasn't Nick's fault of course, but it started their second fall out.
