Abyss

I watched Alastor as we all stood outside of the cigar lounge. Lester and Ian stood on either side of me, armed and watching the door for any potential enemies. It was dead quiet, not even the sound of traffic disturbing the eerie stillness.

Opening my mouth to ask Alastor what he had in mind, I quickly shut it once I saw him lift one long fingered hand. Static crackled through the air and I became aware of a faint electronic buzz in my ears. There was a slight shudder beneath our feet and then a yawning black cavern opened beneath the lounge.

The cavern stretched into an abyss, swallowing the lounge and part of the sidewalk. Bricks tumbled loose were devoured like crumbs. It was an equally horrifying and fascinating sight to behold.

Just as soon as it had begun, the abyss began to shrink, closing itself back up again. There was no sign of the cigar lounge or the men and women left inside it. I couldn't quite decide if I was horrified or impressed.

Turning to Alastor, I said with a wry smile, "When I said to make sure all of Hell knew, I didn't realize you would take it so literally."
