Regret

Three weeks.

That was how long I had to impress everyone and get my ticket to perform at a giant concert to get signed to a label.

There were ten left.

Ten insanely amazing singers.

I didn't stand a chance.

This weeks theme was Broadway. I was thinking of singing 'Dead Girl Walking' from Heathers, although it was kind of inappropriate so I didn't know about it. I needed something that I could belt.

They were also interviewing the top ten as a surprise. Mine was set for ten minutes from now.

I was up in the silence of my own room, although I'm pretty sure everyone I knew was outside my door waiting to hear it. I could see Callan's Silhouette in his room. It still pained me to see him.

I really wanted to get back together with him, but I couldn't trust him and how should I know if he hasn't hooked up with like fourteen girls since we broke up.

My phone started to ring. It was the radio station. I answered it.

"Hello?" I asked. The guy, Drake as Adam had told me, replied:

"Hello, is this Ever Arnolds?"

"This is she," I said back.

"Are you ready for us to patch you through to the show?"

"Yep!" I heard him press some buttons and then start.

"Hello, and we are back with Drake White and I am here with one of our Golden Records competitors, Ever Arnolds! Hello, Ever."

"Hi!"

"Okay, I need to start with this because I'm sure everyone is wondering, where are you from?"

"Well, I currently live in Oahu, Hawaii, but I grew up in Sydney, Australia."

"Wow, Australia. You are the only one. Tell us about your family?"

"Well I have six brothers and sisters, I am right in the middle. My oldest brother, Phoenix died a couple months ago, but hen I have two older sisters, Sumner and Autumn, and then Wynter is a year younger than me, and then June and August are the youngest and they are twins."

"I'm sorry about your brother! Say, Ever, how old are you?"

"I turned nineteen about a week ago."

"Wow nineteen! So what inspired you to enter the contest?"

"Actually it was more like someone shoved me into it. My roommate, Sara's boyfriend is someone's cousin at the studio or something, so he and my ex videotaped me singing with some sort of spy cam and entered it without me knowing. But once I found out about it, I was cool and I have had a blast."

"Well that is actually a one of a kind story, this wasn't long ago, so obviously you broke up with your ex recently, what happened?"

"We had a disagreement about some serious stuff. I don't really love to talk about it."

"YOU SHOULD TELL HIM, EVER!" I heard Callan shout from his room. I flipped him off.

"Who was that?"

"My ex. His room is conveniently across from mine."

"Wow, literally the boy next door. Well we are almost out of time, any last minute things you would like to say?"

"Well, it's always been my DREAM to be signed to a record company, and although it may sound like a guilt trip, it was what my brother wanted and I would literally do anything to make sure it happened, as like, I don't know a final wish or something."

"Inspiring. Thank you, Ever! We hope to see you at the concert! Now after the break, we are interviewing Sam Gabriel, the amazing guitarist slash songwriter from New York."

The phone hung up. Everyone in the hall -Maura, Bay, Kira, Sara, Adam, and Charlie- flooded into my bedroom screaming about how good I did. I saw Callan stand up and flip off his light. I sighed and let everyone start talking all at once.

I didn't hear much of it. I was thinking too much about how I wouldn't be in this position if it weren't for Callan.

Later that night I was awaken by my phone ringing. It was around one in the morning. I checked the caller id, it was Callan. He had called five times already. I answered it.

"Hello?" I said drowsily.

"Look I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt your interview today."

"It's fine, whatever."

"Also, I just thought I would let you know that I am done."

"Done with what?"

"Talking to you, trying to get you back. Seeing you at all."

"Callan your room is right next door to mine you can't not see me."

"No it isn't. I hope you win your competition, Ever." Then the phone hung up. I squinted into his room.

But it wasn't his. No longer was his dark blue comforter or electric keyboard in the room across from mine. It was replaced by a white red and blue plaid comforter with a couple -who I would later find out was my roommate and her boyfriend- making out on the comforter. I gagged and locked my window and closed the curtains.

I felt the first year run down my cheek.

Yes, I couldn't trust him yet. I wasn't sure if I ever could, but I didn't expect him to just fall out of my life.

Soon I was sobbing.
