Ok so this is a short chapter but I wanted it to be in here because when I first saw this I thought this was the best scene that shows that Mal isn't pissed off all the time.

Mal had given the ok, saying that the Reavers weren't interested in them. The mood realized a little bit in relief. Once everyone cleared out of the infirmary to wash up for dinner, Mal ventured down to check up on Kaylee.

Kaylee was sound asleep not even moving a mussel. Mal then turned to River who was also sleeping peacefully. Mal was beginning to wonder if he should throw them off at Whitefall or if he should to the kindness by letting them get off on another moon.

"Hey Captain." Kaylee said weakly behind him. Mal turned to her.

"Hey. Well Kaylee, what's the news?" He asked brightly.

"I'm shiney. Captain a-oh-k." She said still a little loose from the dope. "Can't feel much below my belly though." She added softly. "It's gettin' cold." Mal looked around trying not to tear up. He could see the signs from a mile away.

"well, you just gotta rest." He said walking over to a spare blanket. "Somethin's gonna break down on this boat real soon. Who else I got to fix it?" He placed the blanket on her.

"Eh, don't you worry none. Doc fix me up pretty." She smiled dazed. "He's nice."

"Well, don't go workin' too hard on that crush, huh MeiMei? Doc won't be with is for long."

Kaylee smiled at him. "You're nice." Mal smiled back.

"No I'm not. I'm a mean old man."

"He wasn' gonna let me die. He's just tryin' ta," There was a long silence. Kaylee reached for Mals hand. "It's nobodies fault. Mmmmmk? Just promise me you'll remember that."

"I'll keel that in mind."

"You- are- a nice man- captain." Her words were coming slower as sleep washed over again. "Always lookin' out for us. You just gotta have faith in people." Kaylee turned her head to look at River. "She's a real beauty, isn't she?" Kaylee then began to shut her eyes. Her head tilted a bit more to the side and her hand fell from Mals.

Mal tried to hold her hand a bit longer but she wasn't giving any effort into the action any more. Mals face turned from soft to hard in an instant.
