Catching Fireflies (Doctor who)

The Beginning

From Left to right it is Jayne, River, Kaylee, Zoe, Mal, Simon, Inara, Book, and Wash. Just to let those who didn't catch on with Characters and all. And the one not in here would be the Doctor.

Simon tried to express his words as clearly as possible. He started and stopped himself a couple of times, not sure how to begin. River was in the infirmary with Kaylee, sleeping. She was resiliant at first but Simon explained to her that she was safe here. He gave her medication to help her sleep, which she stuck her tongue out at, being the teenager she was.

Now in the kitchen, he had to explain his life story to seven people he bairly knew. He took a breath and began.

"I am very smart. I went to the best medic ed. in Osiris. Top three percent of my class." Simon sighed. "Finished my internship in eight months. Gifted, is the term." Simon paused. "So when I tell you that my sister makes me look like and idiot child, I want you to understand my full meaning. River was more than gifted. She was a gift. And everything she did, music, math, theoretical physics, even dance. There was nothing that didn't come as naturally to her as breathing to us. And she could be a real brat about it to." He smiled and started to ramble. "She used to..." He looked up at everyone and realized that he was talking to people who really didn't care. There was a school, a government sponsored academy we haden't even heard of. But it had the most exciting program. The most challenging. We could have sent her anywhere, we had the money but she wanted to go. She wanted to learn. She was fourteen." He paused in the memories. "I got a few letters at first, and then I didn't hear for months. Finally I got a letter that made no sense. She talked about things that never happened, jokes that- that we never... It was a code. It just said 'They're hurting us. Get me out.'" After some silence Zoe spoke up.

"How'd you do it?" She asked.

"Money. An-and luck. For two years I couldn't get near her. Then I was contacted by some men, they said that she was in danger, that the government was playing with her brain. If I funded them they could sneak her out in cyro, get her to Persephone and from there I could take her, wherever."

"Will she be all right?" Inara asked.

"I don't know if she'll be all right. I don't know what they did to her. Or why. I-I just have to keep her safe."

"That's quite a story." The Doctor said.

"Yea. It's a tail of woe." Mal said. "Very stirring, but in the mean time. You heaped a world of trouble on my and my crew." Mal was walking closer to Simon.

"I never thought-"

"No, I don't imagine you thought. In consequence in which we got a kidnapped federal officer on board, we got the alliance hard on out trail and Kaylee." Mal was silent then. It hurt him to know there was a chance she could die.

"How much does the Alliance know?" Zoe asked.

"I can't say." Wash said rubbing his face. "I killed the message pretty quickly. So they may just have had out position."

"Or," Mal said turning away from Simon. "They just might have personal profiles on each and every one of us. 'Till that fed wakes up we wont know."

"So what do we do?" Jayne asked. It was silent, everyone in thought.

"The job. We finish the job. I got word from Patience, she's waitin for us. We still go to Whitefall, get out deal, and get out." Mal said. "Keep flying."

"What about us?" Simon asked after a short while.

"Kaylee comes through you and your sister get off at Whitefall."

"If she doesn't come through?"

"Well then you're gettin' off a might sooner."

"That'd be murder." Book said.

"We've made a decision."

"He didn't shoot her." Inara said.

"No but somebody else on this boat did, an I'm scratchin' my head as to why we ain't deal with him." Jayne said.

"Kill a fed?" Zoe asked. "Can you think of a stupider thing to do?"

"If you ain't got ideas," Jayne started.

"You wanna throw me out the airlock," Simon said rushed. "fine. But River is not a part of this."

"Can we maybe vote," Wash started. "on the whole murdering people issue."

"We don't vote on my ship." Mal said. "Because my ship is not the ruttin' town pole."

"This is insanity!" Inara yelled.

People were off talking on their own little rants on how they felt on the subject.

"Bui jui." Mal said. "The way it is is the way it is. We gotta deal with what's in front of us."

"Excuse me." The Doctor said voicing in. "You seem to be hiding the fact that even you know that these two wouldn't survive a day on Whitefall. Now I see no reason why there has to be any killing. We already prevented one death, do we have to put another in place of it?"

"Well if you ask me." Mal said. "You don't really know anything since I recon you don't exist. So why not explain that there?"

"That would be a long story that I would be happy to share with you at ay time but now. However, right now we have about four different problems jumbling up, and arguing weather of not we should toss someone doesn't help." The Doctor stated. Inara turned to Mal.

"You throw them out, I'm leaving too." She said. Inara hoped that would make him reconsider the decision.

"It might be best to do. You ain't apart of this business." Mal then left. Left the room, but not the conversation.

"What business is that exactly?" Simon asked following him. Mal turned to him and glared. "I'm a dead man, I can't know? Is it gold? Drugs? Pirate treasure? What is that make you so afraid of the Alliance?"

"You don't wanna go down this road with me boy." Mal said through clenched teeth.

"Oh you're not afraid of them? I already know you'll sell me out to them for a pat on the head. Hell, you should probably be working for them, you certainly fit the profile." BOOM! Mal had hit Simon for the second time that day/night, and once again Simon was on the floor.

"Saw that comin'" Jayne said smirking to himself.

Ok so, the Doctor wasn't really in this one. I'm sorry. I wrote this a couple of months ago and I'm typing every time I get another chapter done. I swear that the Doctor is in it more. Vote and Comment, please I want to know what people think of it so far. What should I add, what should I get rid of? Any interesting twists I can put in? (I already have a few good ones you'll never guess, but I like to consider some that I've never thought about.)
