Being (Y/n) Stark came with a lot. You had money, connections, popularity, and a whole lot of people watching your every move. But something else you had was an extremely protective older brother named Tony. Ever since you were kids he was always there trying to make sure you were okay and while it was sweet growing up, adult life was a whole different story.
For example, 'No boys until I'm dead. Plus three days to make sure I'm dead.' That was the one rule that Tony made sure was never broken. He just didn't want you being hurt. But there was a problem. You had found someone who was genuinely the most caring and kind man you had ever known. His name was Sam Wilson.
For about three months you had been seeing each other secretly. No one knew anything except for Natasha who had somehow found out on her own. She promised to keep her silence though. It was going quite well and as far as the two of you knew, Tony didn't suspect a single thing.
Right now you were just sat at the kitchen table eating a donut and sipping coffee. FRIDAY had just tried telling you that Tony was looking for you but you paid no attention. He just wanted reassurance that you were actually alive, especially since you once disappeared for six months straight after your eighteenth birthday party.
There was a guy there who caught your eye and he somehow convinced you to go on a road trip across the country. You did a lot of crazy things, some of which included jumping into a swimming pool from a two-story building, getting lost in Vegas, and buying a parrot you named Wingo McFeatherbeak. But that was in the past.
Back to your donut breakfast, you took a bite and ate contently when someone else entered the kitchen. You felt arms wrap around you from behind.
"Hey, baby." Sam mumbled against your neck, placing a few kisses there.
"Hi." You smiled, leaning into his touch.
"Nice choice of breakfast."
"I like to be daring."
He laughed softly and took a seat beside you, going for the coffee mug you had left out and then taking a few gulps from it.
"Refreshing." He commented, putting it back down.
You laughed a little and nodded. "Indeed."
You both sat there for a few minutes, talking and sharing the rest of the donut on your plate. Eventually, though, the donut was forgotten as small pecks on the cheek led to more intimate displays of affection.
Finally, Sam stood up and took your hands, leading you to do the same. "I think we should take this to your room, Miss Stark."
A smirk graced your features. "I think that is a brilliant idea, Mr. Wilson."
You led the way out of the kitchen and down a hallway before you kissed him deeply and pushed the door open with your foot, backing into it.
"What the hell?!" Someone shouted.
You and Sam instantly stopped what you were doing and spun around to see your brother standing in there with a gobsmacked look on his face.
"Shit." Was the first thing Sam said.
"'Shit' is right." Tony glared. He looked at you. "What is my number one rule?"
You shrugged. "No stealing your suits."
"Okay, second rule."
"No guys."
"So what's going on?"
You rolled your eyes, getting angry. "You can't keep me locked away forever, Tony."
"The hell I can't."
"Maybe we should just-" Sam tried to say something but was cut off by Tony.
"-You can wait outside, bird boy."
Sam looked at you with a worried expression but you nodded and told him it was okay. Once the door had shut you turned on your brother, letting all the anger out.
-
That was a week ago. You and Tony had got into a huge fight over your relationship status and now he was doing everything in his power to keep you and Sam apart. This included deadlocking rooms, a two-meter distance at least rule, and making FRIDAY keep tabs on your every move.
But there was a small good side. Natasha had managed to find places for you and Sam to meet up away from the watchful eyes of FRIDAY and Tony. There you planned to finally confront your brother about the fact that you were an adult and more than capable of loving someone without permission. You were doing that now.
"The rule!" Tony practically screamed when you and Sam came into the lab holding hands.
"No offence, Tony, but screw the rule." Sam responded first.
You could see the vein bulging in your brother's forehead subtly stood in front of Sam so Tony couldn't do anything rash.
"(Y/n), we talked about this." Tony warned, giving you a stern look.
"No, Tone, you talked about this." You countered. "You were the one who made up the ridiculous and completely irrelevant rules for me to live by. I'm sick of it so you're going to listen now, got it?"
He was stunned by the annoyance in your voice. Usually you were just sarcastic but the anger that he heard was a whole new experience. Sure, you had sibling fights and raised your voices, but this was different.
"Fine." He said, crossing his arms and stepping back.
"Good." You took a breath, looking at Sam for reassurance before going back to your brother. "Look, I love Sam, okay? You need to understand that I'm happy. That's because one day everyone will stumble upon a person who lights a fire within them that cannot die. To feel that fire burn but have to keep quiet about it is the worst punishment we can bring on ourselves. But me and Sam managed to do it. Look, I don't know where I'm going with this to be completely honest, I just know that I want to hold on to this feeling. It's the best thing I've ever felt and for the first time in a very long time, I feel genuinely happy and excited about life. Please understand that. Please understand that I'm happy with Sam and I'm never going to lose that, no matter what you say."
Tony was quiet, soaking in your words and processing them. You looked at Sam again and he was smiling at you so brightly you swore there were tears in his eyes. However, when you looked back at Tony, your brother was the opposite.
He wasn't exactly mad but more... Sad. Like he'd failed someone. It was the look someone has when they realise it was time to let go of a loved one.
"I just don't want to lose you, (y/n/n)." He whispered. "You were all I had when mom and dad died and I just wanted to keep you with me. You're my sister. I can't lose you."
Tears filled your eyes and you let go of Sam's hand, running over to Tony and embracing him in a tight hug. You stayed like that for a few seconds just to let him know that you weren't leaving any time soon.
"And you're my brother." You eventually said. "You will never lose me. But... I do have a question."
"What's that?" He asked, looking down at you.
"Are you okay with me and Sam now?"
He sighed, looking at the other man across the lab. He narrowed his eyes slightly.
"No." He said. "I'll never be okay with it." He saw you about to snap again but held up a hand. "But... If you're happy that's the best I can ask for. But if Bird Brain hurts you in any way I will not rest until he's dead."
"You don't have to worry about that." Sam spoke up, smiling at you. "I love her with everything I have."
