TW: Vague of surgery/children hospitalized

Thirteen years of medical school and five years in the job had truly paid off.

Little Victor was an innocent three-year-old boy. His body was covered by tubes and wires helping him breathe, but these did nothing to diminish his joy and smiles as he played with a mobile above his hospital bed. You were empathetic to parents going through the worst moments of their lives, but you knew you couldn't let empathy overwhelm your ability to effectively operate.

As a pediatric surgeon, you had to be able to compartmentalize. You couldn't allow yourself to feel the pain with the kids or parents. As a matter of fact, simpler surgeries actually carried more pressure since those were the ones parents expected to go without a hitch. Of course, it wasn't always successful.

You still remembered the one time a child, no older than seven, died from a ruptured appendix. It was the hardest work day you'd ever faced. But you reminded yourself that watching a kid heal was the best.

And now you'd just finished a laparoscopic cholecystectomy on little Victor. It had gone well, no issues, and he was recovering. You'd cleaned up and were preparing to go home. But, as you walked outside, the last thing you expected to see was your boyfriend waiting by the car.

"Tony?" You questioned.

He looked up from checking his phone and a grin lit up his face when he noticed you. "(Y/n)!"

He greeted you with a kiss, letting you know just how much he missed you. You wrapped your arms around him, practically melting in his touch. You hadn't been home in a while because of back-to-back surgeries but you still loved caring for those kids so it wasn't the worst thing to happen.

"I missed you." You mumbled.

"Me too." He gave you that smirk of his. "Everything go okay in there?"

"Hmm-mm." You looked up at him with a smile. "Victor's fine, Nina needs a lot of bed rest, and Robin has an appendectomy Thursday morning."

"Tell her I wish her the best."

"Oh, that'll make her day."

"Yeah?"

"Yep. She loves Iron Man."

"In that case, maybe I'll visit and tell her myself."

You smiled. "I'll let her know."

He kissed you again and the two of you got into the car. As you drove, he noticed you let out a small yawn.

"Tired?"

You nodded a little. "I could sleep for days. So many surgeries."

He smirked. "I hope you're not too tired to do a little surgery on me tonight."

You frowned, oblivious to the true meaning of his words. "Why would I do that? Are you okay? Did something happen?"

"No, I just mean that - Well, you know..." He trailed off, wiggling his brows.

You continued to stare blankly. "What?"

"Nevermind."

He shook his head and smiled, finding how clueless you were cute. You were perhaps the most innocent person he knew. It was adorable.

The next morning, one of your days off, you walked into the kitchen aiming to make yourself some decent breakfast. Your hair was messy and unkempt and the only thing covering your body was one of Tony's shirts, reaching your mid-thigh.

As you sorted through the cupboards, looking for something, you heard soft footsteps behind and then a pair of arms wrap around your middle. You turned your head and smiled as Tony rested his chin on your shoulder.

"Morning." You said, placing a kiss on his cheek.

"Hey." He smiled. "Can I take your temperature? Because you're looking hot this morning."

"Really? I feel fine."

Again, he had to fight a smile at your innocence. But that didn't mean he couldn't have some fun with it.

"How about we ditch this joint and go study some anatomy?"

You turned around so you were face to face. "Since when do you like anatomy?"

"Trust me, I'm an expert in mouth to mouth."

"But that's not-" Suddenly, you realized. "Oh. Oh!"

Tony smiled when you finally caught on. "That's the one."

You turned bright red, embarrassed, and bit your lip. "Sorry."

"Hey, don't be." He moved some hair away from your face and cupped your cheek. "I love it."

"What, my obliviousness?"

"Yeah. It's cute."

"Come on, how is this cute? I'm, like, so clueless."

"You just have a sweet heart." He shrugged, taking your hands in this. "I can see it when you care for those kids. Sometimes I think you love them more than me."

"Tony, that's not true."

"Could've fooled me." He teased.

You playfully rolled your eyes. "I'm serious."

"So am I."

"Have you ever thought of giving up sexual innuendos? Just how many have I missed?"

"A lot." He gave you a smile. "And trust me, I've tried. But it's hard. So... Hard."

You were about to make a comment until you realized the way he was looking at you suggested it was another innuendo. You looked down, sighed, and then looked back up with a small grin.

"That was another one, wasn't it?"

"Yep."

You laughed softly. "I hate you."

"And I love you too."
