A/N: I want to clarify and say that I haven't actually managed to properly shift yet but I've read up on it a lot and have come pretty close some times. If there's anything that needs correcting then please notify me so I can edit it :)

The entire day had been a shitshow. You had been fired from your part-time job, you had an argument with your best friend, and you had lost your wallet somewhere. Today was just not your day and you needed an escape.

It had taken you almost a year, but you had finally learned how to shift realities. You had chosen the MCU because there was something about the complexity in each character that you found yourself drawn to.

The Marvel universe was like your second home. When you told others about your love for it, they would try and remind you that it wasn't real and that the characters were just people being paid to entertain others. But you didn't let that stop your belief. The heroes and villains helped you find yourself and helped you realise that even though they may not be in your reality, there are still people out there who care. That might not make sense to some people but to you it was perfectly clear.

Marvel was your home and the people you loved the most were in it. You actually had a boyfriend there. Bucky Barnes. He was one of the characters you connected to the most when your first started to watch the movies.

Yes, Bucky did bad things. He killed a lot of people. However, he was brainwashed to be the Fist of Hydra so, if anything, the villain title should be gifted to Hydra and not him. He went through a lot. Falling off a cliff, getting brainwashed by Hydra, and being an assassin are not for the weak of heart. So, what did Bucky Barnes need? Recovery, blankets, hot cocoa, time to heal, and lots and lots of hugs.

Once you got to understand him and love him, his dry one-liners became a gift to mankind. And so did his gorgeous smile. Once you shifted, you were one of the rare few who got to see that smile and that was the best thing you could have wished for. You'd known each other for roughly a year and a half in your DR and had been seeing each other for ten months. After the crappy day you had, seeing him again was all you needed.

It was always a little disorienting when you woke up in your room at the Avengers compound and you always had to recall parts of your childhood and other memories exactly before deciding it was the real thing. And, once that was decided, you got up and went in search of Bucky.

You found him standing outside in the cold and staring at the floor deep in thought. He seemed troubled, like he was having one of those off days. You frowned as you walked over.

"Hey, Buck." You said once you reached him.

"(Y/n)?" Just like that his face lit up and he engulfed you in a hug.

You melted into his touch. For you it had been ages since you'd last seen him, but for Bucky it had only been a few hours. Either way, you had both missed the other dearly.

"How have you been?" You asked him with a smile.

"I'm better now." Was all he said as he held your hand and gave it a gentle squeeze to make sure you were really there.

It was roughly midnight in your DR now and while Bucky was sleeping, you were sat in the corner of the room with your headphones on and just casually watching YouTube videos. You had never been an easy sleeper which was why you and Bucky got along so well the first few times you met.

However, you didn't expect the night to go as it did. One second it was completely fine, and the other you had ripped your headphones off after noticing Bucky was thrashing around in his sleep. You tossed your phone to the side and ran over but remembered to keep a safe distance.

"Bucky." You called out, hoping he could hear you. "Bucky, it's (Y/n). You're okay, I'm here. Just listen to my voice, alright? You're okay, Buck."

After a few more minutes of comforting words, Bucky had calmed down a little and you were able to come close enough to place your hand over his own. He didn't wake up this time but seemed more at peace than before which was good.

You smiled sadly placed a gentle kiss to the top of his head. "I love you."

When you woke up, still in the DR, the first thing you felt was Bucky's hand still holding yours, and the first thing you saw was him watching you with something, almost like fear, in his eyes.

"What's up?" You asked in a groggy morning voice.

Bucky looked away for a moment and instead stared at your hands intertwined. "Please don't leave me."

Your face softened immediately.  "Trust me, I would never leave you. I love you too much."

He was still afraid to meet your eyes. "How can you be sure?"

You smiled and placed a hand on his cheek. "Because I decided to shift my consciousness into a whole new reality just to be with you."

"What?" He looked back at you in confusion but you continued to smile.

"It's a long story."
