Being a lawyer was never easy. Sometimes you had to represent people who were very clearly in the wrong or sometimes people who had done things so cruel it made you rethink ever choosing that career path. However, your job was still to defend. You'd been doing it since you were a child.
Whether it be supporting your friends or arguing with a pet, you always defended. But, bad cases aside, you had recently won an argument in which you were perfectly in the right. To celebrate this big win, your boyfriend was taking you out to a fancy dinner.
Through windows that welcomed the light, the restaurant was alive with the vibrant hues of evening, bathed in oranges and golds. The main room was a picture perfect definition of elegance and you couldn't resist a smile as Tony pulled back your chair for you.
"Why thank you." You said with a sweet smile.
"My pleasure." He responded with a cheeky wink as he took his own seat afterwards. "So, what do you think?"
"Deluxe edition." You mused, looking around. "Very fancy."
"Well, you did just catch a criminal that has avoided arrest for the last ten years."
"And you've saved the world more times than I count so who truly deserves the bling dinner?"
"Hmm... Now you mention it..."
"Hey, I was kidding. I'll take it." You chuckled. "Seriously, thank you."
Tony shrugged innocently. "Anything for you."
You spent a few more minutes talking and laughing among yourselves before a waiter came over to announce that you had a visitor. Both of you were confused until a man dressed in an overly uptight fashion with a large satchel at his side started to head over.
"Oh, a suit." You sighed, already knowing what it was about.
Tony gave you a curious look. "You expecting a visit?"
"I didn't think it would be so soon."
"Ms. (L/n)?" The man asked as he approached your table.
You eyed him up again. "Sure."
"I'm George Isles. I'm with Nelson, Charles, Pettrucio-"
"Auditore?"
"What?"
You tried not to smirk and waved for him to continue. "Please."
"Uh… Nelson, Charles, Pettrucio, Lemming, and Stein, Attorneys for Alberto Juan Mancini."
"And the sun just went down. Thanks for coming."
He frowned. "Pardon?"
You rolled your eyes. "You're wasting your time. Mancini was trading in illegal pharmaceuticals and I put a stop to it with hard evidence and an awful lot of persistence. End of story. It didn't require a personal visit."
"Didn't you read the papers?"
"Yeah, owls are not what they seem and a devil otter ate someone's mini van."
"The legal papers."
"Sarcasm." You mumbled, making Tony smile as you got more and more agitated with the lawyer. "Yes, I know what you meant. But I didn't kill anyone, okay? I just put a dealer behind bars. That's part of my job."
"Don't try to play me."
"I'm too busy for this."
He shrugged. "Fine, because I should just be dealing with your legal representation."
You groaned. "I don't believe this."
"Not giving us your lawyer's information is only going to prolong the process."
"If I give you my lawyer's name, will you leave?"
"I will."
"Okay, great. Grab a pen."
And he did so eagerly, evidently determined to leave the conversation. You simply looked at Tony, a little smirk still playing on your features. He knew exactly what that look meant as soon as he noticed the spark of mischief in your eyes. You were really going to tease this poor lawyer.
"Go on." The man then encouraged, his pen at the ready.
You sat up, clearing your throat as if you were about to give a speech. "His name is Dwight Dewey. He works at the firm of Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe."
"Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe? Dewey, Cheatham..." He paused mid-sentence to glare. "Do we cheat 'em and how?"
You just sat there with a toothy grin, using all the self control you had to avoid laughing. "Well?"
"That's not funny." He sighed. "That was very immature."
"It made us laugh."
True enough, Tony was also trying not to laugh as he watched you with adoration. It was always amusing to see you deal with people you didn't like.
"My bosses are gonna want to hear this." Isles stated, packing up to leave.
Still, you merely smiled. "Oh, come on, surely they've heard that one before? Hey, if you want Dwight's number it's 666-66… 66."
The lawyer simply huffed before leaving.
"I love you." Tony said when he was gone.
You turned to him with a smile. "I love you too. Now, what's for the main course?"
