Two Months Later

This can't be happening, I thought, gritting my teeth against the pain, I'm only 34 weeks, too early.
Maybe it's that false labor the midwife talked about, I mean she did say alot of women confused it for real labor. Well whatever it was it hurt like a bitch.
I threw my legs over the side of the bed and waddled into the bathroom.
As I looked into the mirror a gush of fluid ran down my legs, wetting my feet.
I stood there momentarily shocked, looking down. This wasn't right. It wasn't right at all.
"Matt." I screamed.
"Fuck what?" He yelled back. I heard a thud as he got out of bed.
He stood in the doorway looking at me.
"It's too early." I sobbed.
"It's okay, it's fine." He said putting his arm around me and guiding me back to the bedroom. "Let's get you changed and we'll go to the hospital."
I looked at him and nodded, tears running down my cheeks.
He whispered soothingly to me while helping me dress and he would talk me through a contraction. He continued doing it all the way to the hospital.
Once we got to the hospital I was taken to the birthing suites, set up in a room, and left to wait.
"Matt." I cried.
"Ana, relax okay, everything is fine."
That was easy for him to say, it was my body that was betraying me again, not his.
"Okay Ana." A nurse announced walking in. "I'm going to examine you then pop this monitor on so we can keep an eye on baby okay?"
I nodded and wiped my face.
"It's okay Ana, we'll do what we can but if your baby wants out there's nothing we can do about it, but try not to worry, your nearly 35 weeks."
Matt held my hand while she examined me and I have to say it was an incredibly uncomfortable experience.
"Hmmm okay. Your only two centimeters Ana. I'll go and speak to the doctor." She said, attaching the monitor to me. "He'll be in shortly to discuss your options."
I layed there for a moment, trying not to cry. "I'm sorry Matt, I can't do anything right."
He leant down and kissed me. "Ana don't even think it, this is not your fault."
I was about to protest when the doctor entered the room.
"Okay, so here is what we're going to do." He announced approaching the bed. "We're going to attach a drip Ana that has a drug in it that can help stop your labor, for how long, who knows, even a couple of days is better than nothing." He smiled. "Also we're going to give you a series of injections that contain steroids, this is for baby's lungs, to help them get a little stronger, just in case your babe insists on coming now."
I nodded and layed there, holding Matt's hand while I was poked and prodded.
"Sleep." The nurse told me once everything was done.
I turned onto my side and closed my eye's, willing this to work. I looked at Matt, he was laying back in a chair with his eye's closed.
I layed there and I layed there. I tossed and I turned and I bit my own tongue so I didn't scream.
"Matt." I sobbed.
"What, what is it baby?"
"It's not working, our baby is coming."
This baby was coming whether we liked it or not.
