I was hopeful and happy until I saw an alert on the control panel. There was another attack on the flight deck. SHIELD pilots were scrambling to try and help Steve but the quinjets were being destroyed. I pulled up security footage of the area and my blood ran cold when I saw him. The Winter Soldier was here.
"Steve, you need to be extremely careful," I called to him through comms. "Keep your head on a swivel and watch your back. He's here." There was no response so I wondered if he had heard me. I turned to Maria and I could tell that she was worried as well.
"Agent Hill, Agent Fraser, the director has made it to the council chamber," we heard dad's voice say.
"Ok Agent Coulson, keep out of sight until you are needed again," I responded. "Please."
"Understood," he replied. Maria and I were still watching and waiting. She noticed something and gestured it to me.
"Charlie carrier is 45 degrees off the port bow," she said. I noticed on the screen that there were men with guns outside of where we were and I sat back, moving my chair to where I had a decent shot. I pulled out my gun and as they opened the door, I shot them both, thoroughly irritated now.
"These guys just don't quit do they? What are they thinking coming in here trying to ambush us?" I scoffed.
"You two ok?" I heard Steve ask.
"Yes honey, we are fine. A couple of idiots doing stupid shit," I responded.
"Language, Agent Fraser," he replied, jokingly. I rolled my eyes; he had just as bad of a mouth as I do.
"Six minutes," Maria called, sounding bored. I laughed as I looked at her face. "What?"
"Oh nothing," I replied. "I just hope this isn't too boring for you, is all."
"Me? Bored?" she asked, playfully and I laughed. "No not me."
"Hey Sam? I'm going to need a ride," I heard Steve yell.
"Let me know when you're ready," Sam responded. A few seconds later, Steve responded.
"I just did!" I heard Sam groan and a few seconds later, I heard him speak again.
"You're a lot heavier than you look," he said, sounding out of breath.
"I had a big breakfast," Steve responded and I laughed. I heard Steve yell and Sam call out to him.
"Falcon, status!" I called, standing. There was no answer. "Cap what is your status?" Still no response from either of them. "Maria, why aren't they answering?"
"Maybe a comm malfunction," she responded, looking at the panel. All comms were showing as functional, so I had to wonder. Finally, I breathed with relief as I heard them both.
"Cap! Cap come in are you ok?" Sam called.
"Yeah, I'm here," Steve replied. "I'm still on the helicarrier. Where are you?"
"I'm grounded," Sam replied and my heart sunk. Steve had no back up now. "The suit's down. Sorry Cap."
"Don't worry I got it," Steve replied, breathing heavily. I looked over at the multitude of security cameras that were up. I noticed something that made my heart drop. I nudged Maria and showed her.
"Falcon?" she called.
"Yeah?" he responded.
"Rumlow is headed for the council," she informed him.
"I'm on it," he replied. Things were getting bad. We had planned for a lot, but this was nuts. Secretly I was glad that Steve had insisted that I stay here with Maria. My shoulder was throbbing and I was stressing. I rubbed my shoulder, sitting back down in my chair.
"You ok?" Maria asked looking down at me. I nodded, my eyes closed. My shoulder was throbbing and I could feel the skin threading back together slowly. It would probably be completely healed by tomorrow. Didn't mean it didn't hurt like a bitch though.
"Yeah, my shoulder is healing and it hurts," I replied. "Don't tell Steve but I'm actually glad he insisted I stay here with you. He was right it was the better play for me."
"Did I just hear that right Agent Fraser?" his cocky, smug voice asked. Shit, i forgot about the comms being on. "Did you just say I was right?"
"Keep on Cap and I will take back my promise from earlier," I threatened.
"Which one?" he asked. "The one about tonight?"
"Oh dear god, I'm seriously about to turn off my comm," Sam's voice said, sounding disgusted. Maria just looked at me, shaking her head.
"It's a wonder you aren't pregnant yet," she commented.
"Who says I'm not?" I asked, winking and I heard Steve gasp.
"Are you?" he asked.
"No I'm not. Head in the game Cap," I said, rolling my eyes.
"Oh you are so getting it later," he muttered and I laughed. A few seconds later he spoke again. "I'm in. Oh shit."
"Steve are you alright?" I asked.
"He's here," he responded quietly. My heart dropped and my blood ran cold again as I looked over at Maria.
"People are going to die Buck," I heard Steve say. "I can't let that happen." I sat there listening in terrified silence as I heard him plead with the man that used to be his friend. "Please don't make me do this." I stood up looking at the panel, trying to supress the fear that was taking over me in that moment. There was silence for a few seconds and then I heard the unmistakable sounds of fighting. I shot up out of my seat and Maria, took me in her arms for a moment. She held my face in her hands and looked into my eyes.
"He's going to be ok," she said. "Relax. He's strong and he knows what he is doing." I nodded, trying to believe her. I sat back down and listened as the man I loved fought his best friend. I heard gunshots and grunting coming from his comm and my mind immediately thought the worst. It was taking everything in me not to call out to him but I knew that he needed to focus on the fight at hand. That didn't help me though. The only source of comfort that I could find was knowing that everytime he groaned or grunted that he was still alive. This went on for several minutes and Maria was still watching the countdown.
"One minute," she called to Steve. It had been quiet for a minute and I was worried even more now. I began to bite my lip hoping and praying that he was ok and that he would be able to get that targeting blade switched in time. Just then we heard another gunshot and Steve groaned. I shot out of my seat.
"Steve?" I cried. There was no answering other than his heavy breathing. We waited for him to say something.
"30 seconds Cap!" Maria called through comms.
"Stand by," he groaned. The countdown continued and we waited. Just then, we heard another gunshot, followed by a gasp and a groan. Just as the countdown reached zero, Steve spoke again. "Charlie...lock..." he choked out. I looked up at Maria. They had done it. I looked as the targeting system showed 3 targets instead of millions; Maria had targeted the three helicarriers as was the plan.
"Ok, Cap get out of there," Maria ordered.
"Steve, let me know where you are I'll come get you," I said, turning toward the door.
"No!" he cried. "Stay there." I was confused. Why did he want me to stay here? I looked over at Maria in confusion.
"Fire now," Steve ordered. My heart dropped.
"But Steve-" Maria started.
"Do it!" he yelled. I ran back to the panel, tears in my eyes.
"Steve please tell me where you are let me come get you," i begged.
"Alia, just know that I loved you more than anything in this world, in any time. You were my one and only, my best girl. I love you. Stay safe ok?" he said and his comm went dead. I stood there, frozen, tears streaming down my face as Maria regretfully, activated the targeting system.
"I'm so sorry, Alia," she whispered, tears in her eyes. I dropped to the floor, my legs unable to hold me anymore. The tears streamed down my face as we watched the helicarriers destroy each other. I could not handle it anymore and everything went black as Maria called out my name.
