“Aaron have you seen my backpack?” I called pulling on my school uniform.

“No.” I heard him from downstairs, the strong smell of pancakes and bacons. I’m hungry so I went down, excited to eat breakfast.

“Mom, have you seen my bag?” I ask her when I saw mom sitting on top one of the bar stools, a pen in one hand and a couple of papers in another.

“No dear. Maybe it’s in school.” She replied, her eyes still on the papers not bothering to look at me.

I pressed my lips into a thin line. “My keys are in there and I swear Mr. West had it in-”

“Nathaniel?” mom interjected lowering the papers and looked at me. I nodded. “Your chemistry teacher?”

“Yes mom the one you’ve talked—Oh my sweet carrots, it’s in his car!” I gasp at the sudden realization, my hand covering my mouth. “I left it in his car!”

“So what’s wrong with that?” Aaron asked, his back still facing me as he continued cooking. “It’ll give you a chance to see him again.”

“My excuse slip for yesterday is in it! I can’t go to my classes without it. My teachers will think I ditched yesterday.”

“Ditch homeroom, find your teacher and ask for your backpack.” Aaron stated simply.

“I’ve been ditching homeroom a lot recently.” I muttered and sat beside mom on the bar stools. I took glances at the papers which I found out were an airplane ticket and a hotel reservation paper. “Mom, where are you going?”

She snapped out of her papers and turned to me. “That was what I wanted to tell you dear.” She started with a grin. “Logan and I are going on a trip out of town.”

I raised a brow at her. “Like a pre- honeymoon trip?”

She blinked a couple of times to hide her shock and blushed furiously. “Well you could say that.”

“Oh my god, did he propose to you?” I asked getting all excited.

“No not yet.” She waved her hands in front of her face. “But I think he’s going to when we’re out of town.”

I giggled at the thought of how happy my mom would be. She loves him, which I knew. But, Logan is going to be her third husband for Christ’s sake. I don’t want to see my mom cry and crumble down to the floor if things don’t work out like when my dad left. She was in a mess.

All I want for her is to be happy and I believe Logan can make her feel that way. I’m just scared to see her hurt, crying and weeping her face off. I don’t think Aaron can’t handle another round of a change or renew of mom’s husband. He had to deal with the death of his father, mom remarrying my dad, dad leaving her for another girl and another husband coming soon. I don’t think I could deal with that either.

“Mom are you happy with Logan?” I asked silently.

“Yes.” My mom smiled at me, curious why my voice was silent.

“Just make sure you don’t end up with a husband number four mom, okay?” I gave a sad smile. “I don’t want to cry.”

“Oh Kate.” Mom engulfs me in a warm hug as she squeezes me a bit in the process. “I don’t want to cry either. And, trust me dear I don’t want a fourth husband if this doesn’t work out. Guys are so frustrating.”

“Are not.” Aaron scoffs suddenly revealing that he had been eavesdropping on us as he placed the plates in front of us. “But I got to agree with Kate. I don’t want to see you with Husband Number Four.”
