We sat at the table, my mom in front of Mr. West and Aaron beside him. We had steak with mashed potatoes and I was munching on mine when mom decided to talk.
“So Nate, what subject are you teaching at St. Jude’s?” my mom inquired shoving a spoonful of mashed potatoes in her mouth.
“Chemistry.” He smiled politely at her. Kiss ass. “What about you, Dr. Ellison?”
“Please call me Jane.” My mom smiled back. Oh boy, they were getting comfortable with each other. “I’m a surgeon. I-” A buzz cut her off originating from her purse. She looked at it with a frown. “I’m sorry but I have to go. There’s an emergency surgery.”
“That’s alright.” Mr. West smiled at her, Aaron rolling his eyes. I know, they were like flirting! “I’ve got to go anyways. Thanks for the delicious dinner.”
“No, no. Please do stay Nate.”
“I don’t want to overstay my welcome here, Jane.”
“You are not going to overstay your welcome here.” My mom pulled her purse and stood up grabbing her car keys. “Now sit, Nate and continue eating.”
He obeyed her and sat down, and continued his dinner. My mom is so cool. After a few minutes, mom left us there, still eating. So it was weird. Imagine you, your brother and your teacher eating at one table. I shivered at the thought not considering it was happening right now. A throat cleared, but whose was it?
“So um, Aaron.” Mr. West started slowly and uncomfortably. “Are you still in college?”
“No.” my brother said nonchalantly. “I work.”
Mr. West nodded. Okay. Silence again filled the atmosphere. It was really awkward so I hurriedly finished dinner and washed it before rushing to my room. I tipped all the contents of my bag and on to the bed, grabbing a notebook and a pen.
After two hours of reading and writing, my back, neck and hand started to hurt really badly. I stood up and went down and grabbed something to drink. I proceeded to the living room and found Mr. West Sitting at one of the couches, watching television. Where the heck was Aaron?
I slightly smacked his head, gaining his full attention when he looked at me.
“Where’s Aaron?” I questioned him.
“He left.” Mr. West shrugged it off. “He was going on a date or something.”
So isn’t he going to leave already?
“Your brother suggested me to stay to help you with your homework.” He chuckled as if reading my mind.
“But you’re not helping.”
“Who said I was?” he raised a brow. Ugh, whatever. He grinned before continuing, “I’m kidding. Come on, let me help you.”
“But I just finished!”
“So? You want my help or not?”
I sighed and nodded. It was not like he was going to offer some other times. We headed up the stairs and to my room. I looked around him with all of my books and papers scattered on the floor.
“This is how you study?”
“Yup.” I said popping the p.
He kept quiet when I walked towards my bed. I gathered all my chemistry homework and set it in front of him.
“Don’t you use a table?” he asked when I sat on the floor.
“No.”
He shrugged and sat beside me. After a few minutes, I threw a piece of paper at him, bored to death. He was explaining it to me and being me, I did not want to listen to the crap that I already knew.
