"It is our choices, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities"
15 new Slytherins had been sorted that year, less than in Lunas year, but more than last year. It seemed as the years passed there were less and less first years being sorted at Hogwarts. As the headmaster finished up his speech, Luna found herself focusing on his last line 'It is our choices, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities' Sure, Luna was an incredibly gifted and able witch, but was that what he was talking about? A part of her was telling her no. She knew that coming up she would have some incredibly hard choices, but her headmaster couldn't possibly have been talking about her individual choices, she she just brushed it off and dove straight into the feast in front of her.
Dumbledore had also spoken of an upcoming war, that set Luna's nerves on edge, knowing that her parents would force her to pick their side, and knowing that Sirius would choose the opposite one. Could she really fight a war on the opposing side to her brother? Especially if Regulus went with their parents, then she would be choosing between her brothers, choosing between what's right, and what she had to do. Was that what Dumbledore had been talking about in his closing line?
As if sensing her nerves in the air, Regulus took her hand and leaned over to whisper in her ear "I promise nothing will ever happen to you"
Smiling up at him Luna squeezed his hand nodding her head.
"So, Luna, how was your summer?" A nasally voice from across the table who had been watching the siblings exchange spoke up
"Not that it's any of your business Snivellus, but it was actually quite nice" Luna spoke clearly with a dismissive tone because he was really not the person she ever wanted to speak to. Not after what she had heard from Sirius, and witnessed for herself. Bullying, check. Racism, check. Physically assaulting muggle-borns, check.
"Really? That's not what I heard" Snape said almost tauntingly with a smirk plastered on his face
Confused by this, Luna tried not to give into him, but eventually her curiosity get the better of her "Well what did you hear then?"
"Well, a little birdy told me that..." leaning across the table so only Luna and Regulus could hear him now "...a little birdy told me that your screams were so loud, you could be heard up and down the street"
At that, Luna's body went rigid. Memories of what night flashed through her mind. The nightmares flashed through her mind. The night that she lost all she had to give. The night that her parents had invited the sickest people they know and let them have their way with her. The night she lost her innocence...
Seeing the fear plastered on her face, Snape sat back with a wicked grin, proud of the state he had left her in.
Shaking, Luna let go of Regulus' hand, letting her friends know that she suddenly felt sick and was going to head off to bed, then she practically sprinted out the great hall.
With tears streaming down her face, Luna ran into the closest classroom, sitting on the floor hyperventilating with her face between her knees.
Across the hall 2 boys had been watching the interaction. Watching Luna's face pale and her body go rigid before sprinting out the hall. Abruptly standing Sirius followed her, leaving 2 thoroughly confused friends, who were both stuffing their face with pie, and one understanding one sipping his tea.
It wasn't hard for Sirius to find Luna, and when he found her, he knew something terrible had happened. His strong baby sister was sitting in front of him broken, he wanted to kill someone for it.
Knowing that she was his first priority, Sirius sat down next to her, and wrapped his arm around Luna, let her sob into his shoulder whilst rubbing her back. "Shhhh Luna, everything is going to be ok"
"the-they kn-know. they all know" Luna sobbed into his shoulder, and Sirius instantly knew what she was talking about. The night he would never forget. The night he failed as a brother.
~
That night Luna came back to her dorm to find 2 very worried friends, who after seeing Luna run out the great hall decided to follow her back to the dorm. Upon not finding her they searched everywhere that she could be. By the time they got back to the dorm they were about a second from going to Dumbledore and making him search the whole castle before Luna walked through the door.
"Where the fuck have you been?"
"Thank god you're ok!"
Both her friends started at the same time
Ignoring them both Luna walked over and sat down on her bed before starting
"I felt really sick, so I went to Hospital Wing where Poppy gave me some medicine. I wanted to have a walk to see if that helped, and now I'm here" A familiar lump rose in Lunas throat from lying to her friends, but it was better than telling them the truth, anything would be better than having to relive that night again.
While Maria side eyed Luna, not quite believing her, Katie came over and wrapped her arms around her
"I'm just glad you're ok, we came here looking for you, you weren't here so we just got a bit worried"
"I'm just tired, I think I'm going to try and sleep"
~
At the same time Sirius got back to his dorm, with a plan to help Luna, a plan that meant he would have to stop lying to his friends, a plan that would change everything...
