Every student, 4th year and up, were expected to learn how to dance for the Yule ball.

Each house were taught how to by their head of house, meaning, Luna was being taught by Professor Slughorn.

If you were to know anything about Horace Slughorn, you would know that he is not the most coordinated man to grace the Earth, so maybe, just maybe, having him teach a class of 100 students how to ballroom dance wasn't the best idea. But, there was no one else who wanted to spend their day with the Slytherins, so he had too.

Similarly, Luna didn't particularly want to spend her day with the rest of her house, but she also didn't have a choice. She was the Hogwarts champion, so she had to pressure of representing the whole school in her first dance.

One other thing you should learn about Horace Slughorn, is that he is not a very perceptive person. He doesn't read to room like 90% of the time, whether its because he couldn't, or because he just didn't want his view of people shattered, Luna would never know. She only knew that the professor hadn't noticed that the Black twins hadn't even made eye contact in his lessons, yet alone spoken, when less than a year ago they would barely go 5 minutes without speaking, or sharing a look. Maybe if he had been more perceptive, Professor Slughorn wouldn't have paired the twins together, forcing them to dance for almost a hour. An hour where they didn't make eye contact, an hour where they didn't speak, and an hour where Luna was forcing herself to remain calm, and not burst into tears from the feeling of Regulus' hands on her.

Regulus could actively feel the broken pieces of his heart shattering. He was looking down at his baby sister, whose hands were barely on his shoulders, as she was trying to get as much distance between them as possible. She was doing this thing with her face that Regulus knew all to well. It was the face Luna did when she was trying to be brave, when she was holding off tears. Regulus knew he was the cause of her tears, of all her pain, and there was nothing he could do, becuase he had fucked up in every was imaginable.

Regulus doesn't know why he opened his mouth that day, he doesn't know why he tried to talk to his twin sister when they were dancing together, maybe he wanted to hear her voice again, aimed solely at him. Maybe he missed her smile, and her laugh, her personality. All Regulus knows is that he wished he hadn't "Luna..."

She didn't let him finish whatever he was going to say. Luna just set her jaw, and continued to look past Regulus, over his shoulder, watching the clock to see how much longer she was going to be in this hell, muttering to her brother "Don't talk to me"

Regulus wanted to fall to his knees, to physically beg his sister to just listen to his why. To his explanation. But he couldn't, becuase that would cause a scene, a scene that neither of the siblings wanted. Regulus could only try and get Luna to look at him, he could only convey his begging though his voice, and through the way he softened his face, breaking his carefully crafted mask he had been wearing since the start of the summer "Please, let me explain..."

Again, Luna didn't let her twin finish, but this time she looked him in the eye. Regulus hated what he saw. The Luna that was looking at him was not the sister he knew. And it was his fault. He was the reason that there was no warmth in Luna's eyes, that the smile that was almost always on Luna's face was now just a thin line of distain. He was the reason that her words were now venomous. "Don't Regulus, you missed your chance to explain- your chance for me to forgive you"

"Please Loon-"

Luna cut Regulus off yet again, hating with everything inside her that he was using her nickname. The name that was born in hiding from her parents. The nickname that only represented love for her. And now Regulus was using it. Even though she still loved her twin, she hated him with everything she could right now. She hated him so much that she actually started to laugh. She was laughing the type of laugh that a person only does when they are so fed up with everything, that it actually becomes funny. "You know it's funny Regulus. It's fucking hilarious."
