—————————————————————The summer before his final year at Hogwarts, Severus Snape was caught in a dilemma.
Severus Snape was in love with his best friend, Lily Evans.
He had loved her since the moment he had laid eyes on her, going so far as to watch her from a distance in silent admiration before he introduced himself.
Even as a child, Lily had captured all of Severus's attention, with her vivid, red hair and mesmerizing, green eyes.
As their adulthood approached, Severus felt the urge to tell Lily his true feelings.
But how to bring the subject up?
Severus was shy and awkward, tall and pale, with dark hair, dark eyes, and a hooked nose.
After recently turning away from what would have been a very bad path, Severus had lost most of the few "friends" he had in Slytherin house, thus making him even more of an outcast.
Even if she never returned his feelings, Severus both needed and wanted Lily to remain his friend.
Severus wasn't certain what Lily would say if he voiced his true feelings for her.
She was caring, sweet, intelligent, and kind.
Kind to him.....but then again, Lily was kind to everyone. Lily was very popular and unlike Severus, though he was assuming that she valued their friendship, she didn't rely on it the way he did.
And their were many other boys interested in the bright redhead too......
How was Severus supposed to know if she fancied him or some other bloke?
During those months away from the stresses of school, Severus spent his summer contemplating various ways of determining Lily's feelings before he revealed his heart to her.
Remarkably skilled in legilimency for someone his age, Severus could have chosen to just probe Lily's mind and read her thoughts.
But Severus couldn't do that to her, that wouldn't be right.......that would be a violation, a disrespect.
No, there had to be another way.
While he considered his options, Severus tried to spend as much of his time with his beloved as possible.
From running errands in town together to sitting and chatting, Severus and Lily were fortunately neighbors, and they saw each other at some point on most days.
One particular hot, Tuesday afternoon, the two of them had gone to the creek close to Lily's house.
Severus wasn't much of a swimmer, but Lily enjoyed the water and he enjoyed watching her frolic in her swimsuit.
Her green and blue bikini swimsuit......
With little ruffles around the thin knots fastened over her hips.....
Severus pretended to be flipping through a book.
His face fell in concern when Lily became sluggish and left the creek, walking up the grass with a frown.
"What's the matter?" Severus asked, trying to act as if he just then saw that something wasn't right.
"Sorry....." Lily said quickly, "I....we....need to go back......"
Lily whimpered in pain and doubled over. As he watched, Severus's eyes widened and he leapt to his feet, putting his hands gently on Lily's shoulders to steady her.
