—————————————————————Severus Snape slowly blinked his dark eyes opened as he woke one snowy December morning.
An irritated scowl marred his pale face as he looked over.
Severus wore a scowl every morning he woke to find the bed he laid in empty, without his mate's warm, loving touch.
Past the room's cracked door, down the hallway, he furrowed his brow as he listened to the noises that came from the kitchen; the opening and closing of a stove, the sound of supplies being gathered, used, then put away, all mingled with the soothing lullaby of his wife's voice, peppered with curious little chirps and gleeful shouts.
Severus closed his eyes in reluctant acceptance that there would be no morning snuggle for him after all.
A brief moment later, his scowl softened as he opened his eyes again, slowly sat up, and rose from the bed.
Silently, he padded over to the chair next to his wife's vanity and pulled on the robe that had laid over the furniture's back, discarded during the previous night.
As he fastened the black velvet tie around his waist, his frown lessened.
Eager to be anything but alone, Severus padded across the floor and opened the door, anxious to hear all those wonderful noises grow louder.
What little light came from that gray morning streamed into the house through the windows in the hallway as Severus glided down the corridor, made his way down the stairs, and rounded the corner to enter the kitchen.
He had barely opened the door when three pale, little faces looked up with wide eyes and jubilant smiles as they cried, "Daddy!"
"Daddy!"
"Daddy's awake!"
A fourth sound of joy erupted in the form of a happy shriek as the baby girl in Harriet Potter, er, Snape's arms expressed her own joy at seeing her father for the first time on that promising new day.
"Good morning, sweetheart." Harriet smiled over at Severus as the two small boys and little girl who had gladly offered him their elation ran over to gather around his legs.
"Good morning, my love." Severus purred in his low drawl.
"Good morning, you three." He glanced down at his eldest children as he let his large hands briefly touch all of their little heads in silent recognition of each one before he looked up, his black hair falling in his face as his dark eyes flickered from the chubby baby in Harriet's arms to the heavy swell of her belly that her apron highlighted more than concealed.
"I see the six of you have been busy this morning." He purred, although an undertone of irritation clearly rang in his low voice.
"The cookies are nearly done." Harriet nodded as she smiled and glanced over at the timer on the oven, "Can't have Christmas without them, can we?"
The children laughed as they stepped along with their father as he slowly made his way over to Harriet.
His black eyes bore into her emerald gaze as he frowned and said, "You should have been in your nest this morning. You need to rest, not stand in the kitchen and-"
"-And I'm fine, Sev." Harriet cut in as she cupped his face in her palm. A soft smile danced on her lips as she reassured her mate, "I'm perfectly fine."
Although Severus was less than thrilled that his darling omega refused to obey his command, return to her bed, and wait there for the birth, he had never known a happier time than the next hour spent playing board games with his family while they all enjoyed the warm, Christmas cookies that emerged from the oven.
As he glanced over at his wife with his black eyes narrowed in anxious concern once the children went outside to play, his breath caught in his throat as he found his beautiful wife smiling back at him.
"I love you, Sev." Harriet smiled, "I'll lie down in a bit, I promise."
As she watched her alpha take her hand and raise it to his lips for a kiss, a soft blush heated her cheeks.
Her breath hitched in her throat as his dark eyes glimmered while he looked at her and purred, "I expect a proper greeting when I wake in the morning, Mrs. Snape."
As they leaned in until their lips touched, the sound of the children's laughter drifted through the window from outside.
The Snapes looked forward to having a very Merry Christmas indeed.
