Magical Britain needed a king.

Demanded one.

Magical Britain would have a king, regardless.

After giving her life to birth yet another daughter, the current King's wife died with a curse on her tongue that banished the possibility of another woman taking her place and completing the duty she had failed to fulfill.

One generation passed.

Two.

In a family littered with daughters, the reigning house of Black married into the house of Malfoy.

Less than two years later, the previous queen's curse was broken by the birth of a blonde-haired, gray-eyed baby boy.

Draco Malfoy was raised to believe he was truly special from the moment he entered the world.

Growing up in the spindle-covered palace as the heir to the throne, future ruler of the magical world, and his mother's most beloved treasure, Prince Draco was the personification of royal privilege by his eighteenth birthday.

Wealthy, powerful, handsome, and exceedingly arrogant, Prince Draco walked with swagger as if he wielded the same fiery might as his namesake.

Despite its many privileges, his birthright also held many obligations, including a mandatory audience with the ruler of non-magical Britain.

As Draco rode in his gilded carriage next to his mother and father the morning of that scheduled meeting, he sneered out the window.

"May I ask the point of this?" He scoffed, "Should we not ignore them completley if we aren't willing to wipe them from the earth?"

Queen Narcissa, Draco's mother, made a face as if she smelled something foul while King Lucius, Draco's father, spoke, "Now, now, Draco......A good ruler has patience....even for those happenings that may be considered....beneath him. Muggles are useful for farming, if nothing else."

"We can grow food with magic." Draco huffed.

"A slow and arduous process that would take too long for too many." Lucius sniffed, "Let the muggles tend the fields so that wizardkind may pursue more noble undertakings. This is the balance of the world.......Today we will greet King James as requested and then tonight, we will think of him no more."

Draco sighed as he looked out the carriage window at the passing landscape.

Even muggle transportation was needlessly complicated.

Apparition would have seen their journey instantly completed.

Draco arrived with his parents at the muggle king's castle later that day.

He forced his scowl to lessen as he politely participated in forced conversation with King James for the coming hours.

Nearly beside himself with boredom, Draco glanced down at the carved, mahogany table he found himself seated at and began to silently count the notches in the wood.

Without warning, the double doors to the elaborate dining room opened suddenly.

Conversation ceased.

Draco looked up.

His eyes widened as a young woman walked inside.

No older than him, Draco couldn't help but stare as he admired her elegantly plaited, brown hair, the way her emerald eyes flashed, all the way down to the lithe figure her frothy gown did its best to modestly conceal.

"My darling, I am almost finished." King James  nodded at the girl, "Matters of state are not for a princess to worry over."

Draco's eyes widened.

"I apologize for the interruption, Father," The girl said quickly, "I.....I've lost my spectacles again and I should very much like to go out riding tonight. Have either of you seen them anywhere?.....Oh!" The girl exclaimed as she noticed the Malfoys, "I....I beg your pardon, I'm Princess Harriet. It's an honour to meet you, Queen Narcissa, your majesty," She said as she curtseyed to Narcissa, "And King Lucius," She curtseyed again at Draco's father, "......And you as well, Prince Draco."

Draco's eyes nearly bulged out of his head as the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen bowed to him.

He didn't hear what came next, what King James said, or his father whispering in his ear about the princess's non-magical blood.

As Harriet skipped out of the room after being given a tip on where her spectacles may be, Draco stared dumbfounded after her.

The future king of magical Britain needed a queen.

Demanded one.

Regardless of her blood status, Prince Draco silently vowed that he would have Princess Harriet as his queen, whatever the cost.
