The first week of school zoomed past. I got some homework here and there. I spent most of my time with Aiyanna and James. It was nice to have a girl to talk to, but also nice to have a guy friend. James still seems pretty mad about the whole hair thing, but he says he's really not. Honestly, it's not a big deal. My hair is just dead proteins and I'm sick and tired of carrying around dead things.

I was up in the girls dormitory, reading from Hogwarts, A History, when the door cracked open. I looked up from my book to see Aiyanna and Lavana. I closed my book and nodded my head. We wanted to do this when nobody was in the dormitory other wise it would be hair cutting mania!

I pulled my trunk into the middle of the room and sat down on top. Aiyanna moved to stand in front of the door to make sure nobody got in. Lavana, she just pulled out her scissors and waited for me to say go.

I took a deep breath. "Ok, I think I'm ready." Lavana walked up behind me and I braced myself for the snip.

"You think or you are?" Lavana asked in her accent.

"I'm positively sure," I said slowly. This is going to scare my mom and I don't think I can handle that.

There was a long pause, then a long drawn out snip of the scissors. I watched a bunch of hair fall out of the corner of my eye. I sighed with relief. This was really happening. I was reality cutting my hair

Another snip... then another... then another one. I was ready to just look in the mirror at my new hair, but I stayed glued to my spot. I didn't want to mess Lavana up and ruin my new hair cut. I wonder what James will think of it? Why do I care? This is my choice! I will do whatev-

"Done," Lavana said excitedly from behind me. I brushed the hair off my shoulders and brushed the ends of my hair with my knuckles. I felt the tips of my new short hair and instantly felt a little bit less kid like. I felt almost free. Amazing what a new hair style will do to you!

I stood up and walked to the nearest mirror. I screamed. Aiyanna and Lavana came rushing by my side.

"Do you not like it?" Lavana asked sadly.

"No, I love it!" I screeched as I turned around and gave her a big hug. My hair was the same shoulder length as Aiyanna's. The only difference was that mine had layers and mine was dirty blonde.

"Well, I need to go to the library because I have a potions essay due on Wednesday and I have yet to start it," I turned, grabbed my bag, and headed out the door.

Someone was sitting down in the empty common room. I walked down the stairs a little farther and noticed it was James.

"Shouldn't you be studying or playing quidditch?" I asked as I jumped over the side of the couch and landed next to him.

James turned his head slowly and then his eyes widened. "What? You don't like it?" I asked, gesturing towards my hair.

"I think it looks... Great. But, if I were just being honest, I didn't think you needed to change it," he smiled at me. I blushed at his comment, but stood up so he wouldn't notice.

"Where are you going?" He asked from behind me.

"Library," I called over my shoulder. I heard some footsteps and then looked to the side. Sure enough, James was standing right beside me.

"Mind if I tag along?" He asked, still smiling.

"Not at all," I said, smiling back.
