I reached for the wand in my pocket and pulled it out slowly. Lavana flashed me a look.

"Mother! She has her wand!" She yelled to Maeve. Her mom walked over to me, but didn't take my wand. She just undid the rope and stepped back.

"Why?" I asked her, confused by her actions.

"Yeah, mom! Why?" Lavana spat angrily.

"Because, I want to kill her fairly and not forcefully!" Maeve flashed an evil smile at me. I scrambled to my feet and into dueling stance. Maeve mimicked me.

I raised my arm and screamed, "Expelliarmus!" But nothing happened to Maeve. She just laughed at me. Then it hit me. She doesn't have her wand, I have the upper hand.

"Avada Kedavra!" I screamed, but still nothing happened. This time Lavana joined in laughing.

"You must not really want to kill me, mudblood!" Maeve spat at me. I shook my head, refusing to accept this.

"Expelliarmus!" Lavana said and my wand flew from my hand. I was a goner.  She stood above with her wand inches from my face.

"Avada Keda-" but she was interrupted by someone else's spell. Lavana fell to the ground as blood spread over her body. I gasped in shock and turned to look at the person who did this.

"James!" I cried as I hugged him around his neck. "How did you know where to find me?" I asked him.

"Well, I could say instinct, but I saw a bunch of lights here so..." He trailed off and grinned at me.

"What did you do to my poor Lavana?" Maeve screamed at us. I snapped my head in her direction which stopped her dead in her tracks.

"She killed my mother! She deserves what she got! And so do you!" I raised my wand and worry crossed Maeve for a short second.

"You can't use the killing curse! You're too good and too nice!" She laughed at me.

"Avada Kedavra!" I screamed with meaning. This time something did happen. Maeve fell backwards, but didn't get up. My hands started to shake and my wand fell to the ground. I felt my legs crumble beneath me.

"What have I done," I whispered as tears welled in my eyes. My vision was starting to spot and I felt dizzy.

"We should probably go tell the headmistress," James said quietly into my ear, aware of what just happened.

"I can't walk," I squeaked and the tears finally fell. That's what Maeve wanted. She wanted me to go to her level and I did. I failed miserably. All I wanted to do right now was to jump off a bridge into a bunch of pointed rocks.

James lifted me of the ground and carried me in his arms back to the school. He didn't seem to mind my weight at all.

I leaned my head on his shoulder and then everything went black.
