I hadn't even noticed the time until my mother pointed it out. I marked my place in the journal, and quickly got under the cold covers on my bed.

I figured that would be enough reading for one night.

The next day at school, I found myself counting down the seconds until we would be able to go home. Each class was on subjects that I already knew, and seemed to drone on. Now I understand what the other students have to go through everyday.

A lightyear and a half later, the obnoxious chime of the bell sounded, allowing me to exit the building.

I met up with Carmen at the front gate of our school, and led the way.

"Hey. What's up?"

"Nothing much," I replied. I glanced at my watch. It was only 2:50, so we'd have a lot of time to go do something.

As the four way intersection neared us, I motioned for Carmen to take a right, which was the opposite of the route we usually took on our trip home.

"Where are we going? Our turn's that way," she spoke pointing behind her.

"I know."

After a couple of minutes I stopped abruptly, causing my friend to run into me.

"What are we doing here? This is your
old house," she asked.

"Yeah, this was originally my grandma's home, but she didn't mind selling it for a larger one."

We took a look around. The for sale sign was still up, but it was leaning to the side. I straightened it up and wiped some dirt off of it so that it could be read clearly.

It was a nice little house; it was in good shape for an older made home. We just needed a bigger living space as my brother and I grew up.

"Hello little darlings!" a voice behind us cheered, "What are y'all doing on such a fine afternoon?"

It was Barbara, a family friend of ours. She was one of Maya's many friends and they'd all get together from time to time.

"Oh, hello Miss Barbara! We're just checking up on the house," I told her with a smile.

"Cool. I haven't seen you girls since...well, the funeral," spoke the lady. "I know it might seem silly, or maybe even crazy, but your grandma still lives on."

Carmen and I nodded. "It was nice speaking to you. Bye lovelies!" Barbara hugged us before going back inside her neighboring home.

We continued down the cobblestone pathway to the shed in the backyard. I believed that there was something more behind Barbara's words than she was letting on. She stated with certainty that Maya still lives, like she wanted us to understand and comprehend what she was hinting at...

I took out my ring of keys, and inserted the shortest silver one into the lock on the shed door. Once it was unlocked I stepped inside and pulled the metal chain linked to the light switch. The rows of lights slowly sprang to life one by one. The storage area was a considerable size.

"I was reading what was left of the journal last night, and mentioned some thing, an invention to be exact, that Maya left in here," I explained to Carmen.

We poked around at the items that were in the shed. I found old cassette tapes, a Walkman, and some other toys and things that had been forgotten.

After fifteen minutes of searching, I was about to give up until I noticed a shiny looking box hidden by a see-through cover.
