CHAPTER 20

"So, Katniss, the Capitol must be quite a change from District 12. What's impressed you most since you arrived here?" asks Caesar.

Her nervousness is clearly seen and I'm sure she's racking her brain to find something sensible to say. At last, she gets out that she liked the lamb stew. Caesar starts laughing, so do the audience. So...Katniss has no game plans...she's trying to wing it.

This is worrying. If she's got no plan...what is she planning to do?

The interview moves on and Caesar asks her about her costume for her opening ceremony. She answers him with a witty question of whether Caesar meant after she got over the fear of being a living torch. The audience had a good laugh. At least she's trying.

She goes on complimenting and praising her stylist Cinna, and she even twirls for the audience. That surprised me. Katniss would never do that in a million years if she were here in District Twelve.

She clutches onto Caesar to find her balance. Once he sits her down, he asks her about the eleven she got in training. It's obviously either some really impressive stunt that Katniss pulled off or something...I really don't want to go there.

Katniss plays it safe and deflects the question to the Gamemakers, gaining a couple of seconds away from the camera to compose herself. Finally, Caesar hits the nerve.

"Let's go back then, to the moment they called your sister's name at the reaping," says Caesar. His mood is quieter now. "And you volunteered. Can you tell us about her?"

Even far away, I can feel her freeze up. She grimly makes out the next few words.

"Her name's Prim. She's just twelve. And I love her more than anything."

The silence grows like cancer, sending a shiver down my spine.

"What did she say to you? After the reaping?" Caesar asks.

"She asked me to try really hard to win."

The temperature in the house seemed to fall suddenly. My hands felt cold and my neck tingled. An ice-cold rigidity took over my body.

"And what did you say?" prompts Caesar gently.

When she spoke, her voice seemed to have dropped an octave. "I swore I would."

"I bet you did," says Caesar. The buzzer goes off, he wishes her luck and Katniss returns to her seat.

What should I be feeling now? The anxiety that had built up before Catnip's interview had gone. The strength in my body seemed to have drained in an instant. I slumped against the wall.

When I look up again, Caesar is interviewing Peeta Mellark. He seemed to be some unreqiuted love.  I can relate to him actually. That's exactly how I feel about Katniss. It hurts.

"So, here's what you do. You win, you go home. She can't turn you down then, eh?" says Caesar encouragingly.

"I don't think it's going to work out. Winning. won't help in my case," says Peeta.

"Why ever not?" says Caesar, mystified.

Peeta blushes beet red and stammers out. "Because. because. she came here with me."
