CHAPTER 9

With six rabbits and a squirrel, I go to the Hob. We need bread anyway.

On entering the Hob, I realise that the usual banter is missing. It is replaced by silence.

Ignoring the odd change, I pursue for Greasy Sae's stall. But the silence grows. I can feel eyes burning through my shirt and scorching my back.

I look around ever so slightly and those who were watching return to their businesses. No one looks me in the eye.

It is Greasy Sae who finally breaks the silence. She takes my hands and looks me straight in the eye.

"We're all so sorry Gale," she says.

This renders me speechless. None of these people helped me or Katniss when we were starving!

But they were also struggling to survive, some part of me whispers. But all these people cared about Katniss.

Momentarily stunned, I give her a stiff nod. Several hands pat my back reassuringly, but I still stare at Greasy Sae. These people don't think she's going to make it back.

The words leave my mouth before I can even think twice.

"She's coming back you know."

The old woman stares at me, bewildered.

I turn around. "She's coming back as a Victor," I say, pretty loud.

The crowd looks at me like I'm mad. Surely, who would believe me?

District 12 has got only two Victors since the beginning of the Hunger Games. Two. The only living Victor won about twenty-four year ago and then he indulges in alcohol and now he's a pure drunkard. I push away the thought that he is Catnip's lifeline now.

"Rooba," I call out, spotting the butcher in the crowd. "Remember a time when Katniss brought you damaged meat?"

She looks confused initially, trying to comprehend what I'm trying to achieve.

A moment later a small smile appears on her face.

"No," she smirks, "But I get plenty from you," she says pointing at me.

I chuckle.

The crowd continues staring.

"Remember the time we brought a buck home?"

Rooba nods, her smile growing bigger.

"And the time-"

"What are you trying to do boy?" an old man asks.

I turn to him. "Don't you see? Katniss can win if she gets her hands on a bow!"

I remember what I told Katniss yesterday. Without a weapon, she will be the hunted. But a bow can change that. With a bow, Katniss will be the hunter.

"Then we'll get her a bow!" shouts Greasy Sae.

"Gather here everyone! I'm going to start a collection for Katniss. We'll send it to the Capitol so Katniss can get a bow! We'll sponsor her!"

She lifts an iron pot from her stands and puts it on her counter. "Here."

Surprise, joy and gratitude overwhelm me.

I am the first one to put my money. I simply empty my pouch, putting in every single coin I own.
