School.

An old dilapidated building. Nothing more.

It was last renovated 24 years ago when Haymitch won the Quarter Quell. It's surprising that it's still standing,

The drab school uniform reflects my mode. Grey shirt and black pants. It's one of the good things about school. We get a new pair of clothes every year.

The only other thing but makes me attend school is the lunch provided. Nothing compared to the fees to the Capitol, but its filling. Its food after all.

But it's my last week here.

Thom catches up to me at the entrance.

"You alright bud?" he askes.

No, I'm not. That's what I want to say, instead, I give him a stiff nod.

He doesn't question further.

"Come on we've got an hour of history now."

I groan. History. Who cares about people who lived 5000 years ago in Indus or Egypt. And the history of Panem is basically what happened in the last 75 years. They don't even mention what happened before the dark days.

The next few hours took a lifetime to get over. I tuned out most of the classes except mathematics. It's one of the only classes which is useful in life in district 12. Science is important too, but the Capitol never wants students from the districts.

By lunch, my eyes burn. I never knew my eyelids were so heavy. It feels like someone is pounding my head with a sledgehammer.

I take the lunch tray and sit down at the farthest table away from the others. I take a few mouthfuls and then stare at the food, having lost the apatite to eat more.

What is she doing right now?

The thought causes a strong sting, in my left temple.

I gulp down some water, hoping to control my pain when something distracts me.

Panem's national anthem blows throughout the canteen. We stand.

Then the age-old sign of the Capitol appears in the televisions they setup earlier.

After it ends I slump into my chair, for the others continue to stand I hear a slight hiss. A shiver runs down my swine as I turn to face President Snow.

"Since the Dark Days, our nation has known nothing but peace and prosperity. Ours is an elegant system where the Districts are the body and the Capitol is the beating heart. Your hard work feeds us and in return we protect you."

Protect us? From who? The wild animals? Cold? Starvation?

Those sick monsters. They don't care even a bit about us. We're nothing but slaves who can be disposed of when we're not needed.

Snow goes on.

"Panem today. Panem tomorrow. Panem forever."

Wow, What an amazing lie.
