Someone once told me that all I needed was to believe in myself.

Who was it? Anyone? Everyone? I can't remember. But I've never believed it.

The idea that you can do anything you put your mind to was always a little... far-fetched for me. Obviously, some things are truly impossible. That's just life. But, that being said, many of the things we tend to tell ourselves are impossible are actually more possible than we might think.

We're quick to talk up others' successes and very slow to compliment ourselves. In fact, it seems the majority of people tend to think they're awful at everything.

Are they right? They couldn't be on a practical level. But, even so, we've almost become so convinced that our fantasies can't be reality that we don't recognize how dreams like to, every once in a while, maybe just come true.

That doesn't mean that 'believing in yourself' is the miracle way to becoming everything you've ever wanted to be, but it does mean that our mindsets are just as important as our capabilities. What is it people say? "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."

We can't help that we dream, that we wish for the seemingly impossible. Is there something so wrong with that? Even insensible dreams can spark a more practical imagination, inspire a much more real idea.

Plus, dreams bring joy, hope, purpose, striving, a goal, however lofty, that makes life worth living. The world's not a utopia, and that means there's always something that needs changing.

So do we dare? Do we dare to dream? Will we let go of logic just for a moment and picture all the fantasies of our childhood imagination? Tell me, what's it going to hurt?

Maybe dreams bring pain, disappointment, jealousy, regret. Maybe they remind us of how little we've done, what we didn't do, what we'll never do. It isn't always easy, being a dreamer.

The world can be cruel to dreamers, believe it or not, at least the ones who try to stand up and do something. People can be so judgemental, so petty, so shallow, despite the fact that in their hearts, they're dreaming just as much, whether they know it or not.

But is it worth it? Is the brighter tomorrow, the hope for the unknown, worth the scorn and mockery and rejection? Will our dreams multiply and grow or crash and burn?

Either way, they hold a place in our hearts, a part of who we are, and we can try to forget, but nothing can ever change that. Mankind was made to dream.

In a world that's slowly falling apart, ripping at the seams, our souls still long to soar. Beneath selfishness and greed and desire, we do wish to see the world flourish. We're pained by the suffering, we fear the unrest, we long for peace, stability, and unity, for everyone. And we aspire to something greater within ourselves, certainly in a physical, worldly sense, but also in the sense of our hearts, as we seek to discover who we are and who we can be.

I don't mean to turn World Dream Day into a bore with these deep, philosophical thoughts, although I'm no scholar, but this is what I take this day to be all about.

Dreams. Aspirations. Hopes. Wishes upon shooting stars. For a better earth, for a better tomorrow, for a better life, from the smallest of daily things to the greatest international scale. Let's put dreams into action.

"The world's not going to change itself." That's what they say, right? Be the change you want to see. Far easier said than done, but we have to start somewhere. Let's see where it goes, shall we?

I don't know about you...

But I'd love to fly.
