I slip back inside the house, exhaustion flooding over me all at once. I look at my phone to see that it's already 5:30am, so hopefully my brothers wouldn't be up yet. There is one thing that I learned about them and it is that they can be up at unbelievable hours whatever the day. They call it « business », what the hell does that even mean ?
"Magnolia ?" I suddenly hear a voice behind me as I start walking up the stairs on my tippy toes, trying to go by unnoticed. Well I guess I failed miserably.
Fucking shit. Told you they were always lurking around.
"Why on the earth are you up at this time of the night ?" Leo scolds me in a hushed voice to prevent walking up anyone else, as I see him appear in the corridor.
Defeatedly, I let my shoulders drop down and I fully turn around to face him, an innocent smile plastered on my face.
"I could ask you the same question brother." I slightly frown mockingly, but stop when I see not even a hint of amusement lingering on his very stern face.
"Answer the question Magnolia." He coldly orders, not leaving space for any discussion or way to get out of this situation.
"I couldn't sleep okay ? I needed fresh air, so I went outside." I clench my teeth together as I once again manage to spill out a lie. It becomes a mechanism and I start to fear how easy it is getting for me. Years of practice makes the master after all.
"You didn't go outside though. I was in the living room when I heard your tinny little steps going towards the stairs." He states firmly. "There is no other way out, except for the front door, which is guarded. So ? What did you do." With every word spoken of his last sentence, he approches on step towards me, slowly but deadly. I hardly swallow.
"I- I got fresh air in the house." You dumb ass, did you really just say that ? "By fresh air I meant, not the same air as I my room, it was suffocating me..." I start fidgeting with my fingers as I look down on the floor, a slow fear of what Leo could do to me creeping in my head. I can see his deep stare burn right through the darkness to attain me and all I want to do is escape it.
He stays silent for a little while longer and all I can do is hold my breath. "Go to sleep, I will speak with Damon tomorrow." Are the last and only words he says before I watch him disappear somewhere in the darkness of the house, leaving me completely alone in the dark staircase.
I didn't even notice that I was holding my breath the entire time of the conversation with my brother and I let it go once he is out of my sight. I grip the barrier of the staircase as I slowly start walking up the stairs with shaky legs, my exhaustion slowly taking over me. When I finally reach my room, I shut the door quietly, definitely against the fact of crossing an other brother that might be herring in the corridor.
