I grabbed my bag and walked into the long driveway where Natasha was waiting for me. She'd been my best friend for years.

I climbed into the car. She turned to look at me. "So how was your birthday?"

"Rafael ruined it." I groaned. "But I got my mom's necklace." I showed it to her.

"I hate Rafael. He ruins everything." She rolled her eyes and backed out of the driveway. "Like he's worse than my brother."

"Nettie, Jesús is two. How is he going to ruin anything?" Nettie had been her nickname for about three years, I had no idea why, I think I said it once and it just stuck.

"First of all, two-year-olds are very capable of ruining things, second of all, I'm talking about Tony."

"Tony is 23 and lives in Mexico. How is he ruining anything either?"

"You are no fun today." She frowned.

"We have a math test and my pants are getting cleaned so I have to wear this stupid skirt. And my parents are fighting again so that's always fun."

"I don't understand why your mom is still married to your dad."

I put on an especially thick Spanish accent. "Divorce is a sin, mi amor."

She laughed. I liked making her laugh.

"Aren't you guys Catholic? Can't you just like apologize?"

I giggled. "Probably, but not if you're dead."

"Ohhh, yeah, Cartel." She laughed. "So how's the mighty shark anyways?"

"Still swimming." I groaned.

"If only he did the drugs, then he would die faster."

"Right." I rolled my eyes.

She sighed and turned on the radio. A Spanish song was playing, I recognized it but I didn't know what it was called. Natasha started singing along in an effort to cheer me up.

"You are going to crash the car if you keep dancing like that." I laughed.

"You better start dancing then, you don't want to die sad." She giggled.

We pulled into the school parking lot and I waited for her to get the stuff from her car.

"Jesse!" Nettie yelled. He was walking towards us, we had been hanging out with him for the past two years, he was the reason we always had sleepovers at Nettie's place, I couldn't go to his house and he definitely couldn't come to mine.

"You ready for that math test today?" He asked.

"Hell no." I smiled.

"I completely forgot about it." Nettie looked at him sheepishly.

I always wondered if there was a thing going on between them, but they never seemed to show interest in each other.

There was something about the two of them that I couldn't put my finger on, it was like they both knew something that I didn't.

I'd never thought about Jesse romantically either, I hadn't thought about any boys like that before.

It was probably just the lack of options at our school.

We walked to gym class. Nettie and Jesse talked about the upcoming tennis match, they both played, I had no interest in wearing a skirt and the coach wouldn't let me wear anything else.

We changed for class, I hated changing in the locker rooms. It always made me wish I wasn't me.

Girls are so much prettier to look at, and there were so many nice girls at our school that definitely shouldn't be single.

A prime example, my best friend. If I was a boy I would have asked her out ages ago. She was beautiful inside and out, sometimes she got a little temperamental, but she was never mean to people.

But I wasn't a boy, so I couldn't ask her out.

I also wasn't one of those people. Neither was Nettie.

After we changed I walked to class alone, I always changed in the bathroom stalls so nobody would see me, today Nettie had left me.

Rude.

I left her all the time though, it was awkward standing with a bunch of half-naked girls. It made me feel weird.

When I got to the gym Jesse and Nettie were talking, Jesse looked out of breath, he must have run here.

Strange.

They looked surprised when I got to class, it was almost as if they were talking about something they didn't want me to hear.

My parents did it all the time, I didn't mind. They probably had a good reason.

Our teacher, Mr. Alverez gathered us in the middle of the gym.

Apparently, we were running today. Great.

I could run fine, actually, I was pretty good at it, but I always go so sweaty. I would have to shower. I hated having gym as our first class.
