Trigger Warning - Domestic Abuse.
...

After school finished Nettie was coming over. We had a history test tomorrow that we needed to study for.

Mother was in the kitchen when we got home, she had a few new bruises. I'd expected that.

Nobody speaks to Father like that.

Nettie pretended she didn't notice like usual. "Good afternoon Mrs. Sanchez!"

"Lovely to see you per usual, Natasha. How is Aitana?" Mother responded.

"She's wonderful, Jesús is keeping her busy." Nettie smiled.

"I always forget that your mother is younger than me, Tony is your half-brother right?" She pulled some muffins from the oven.

"Yep, I forget too, you look very young for your age."

Mother laughed. "You give me an ego." She handed us both muffins. "Don't eat this right away Rosa, you'll burn yourself."

I set the muffin down. "Is Raf home?"

"No, he's with your father and his friends." She sighed.

"What do they even do at those things?" Nettie asked. She was waving a piece of her muffin around in an attempt to cool it down.

"I don't know, maybe torturing someone." Mother shook her head.

I laughed. "Rafael can't handle blood."

"We all have our weaknesses." She scolded me.

"Right, like your husband." Nettie said.

Mother laughed again. "You should come over more often." She paused. "I'll let you two get to studying. I have lots of work to do before the boys get back."

"I'll come help if we finish early." I said.

"No you won't, I'm supposed to do it by myself." She said.

I rolled my eyes. "C'mon Nettie." We walked upstairs to my room.

Spice followed us. "Get out." I practically shoved him out of the room.

"Why do you hate him so much?" Nettie sat on my bed.

"He's a gross rat, but he's my mother's dog, so I tolerate him."

"He's cute." She frowned.

"Sure, if you're blind." I laughed.

I sat down on the floor and opened the textbook. "Okay, the dark ages."

...
We studied for about two hours and then conversations drifted.

We were both sitting on my bed.

"So what drugs do you guys even do?" She asked.

"I don't know." I laughed. "Meth, coke, maybe heroin."
