Trigger Warning - Abuse, Sexual Assault.
...

I walked through the pews in the church. She'd been gone for hours and I was bored out of my mind.

Val walked up to me as I rounded the end of the aisle. "What's going through your head?"

"Why do bounty hunters have such a big church?" I smiled slightly.

He smirked. "I don't know if I've used this joke with you already, but we're catholic, and all of our sins go away with a simple confession."

"Still doesn't answer why it's so big."

He shrugged. "Big family I guess. I've been in much larger ones so it never really occurred to me."

"This is the first church I've been in since I came to Spain."

"Where are you from?" Val leaned against a support beam.

"Kansas." I pressed my lips into a tight line.

"I'm guessing you don't miss it?" He narrowed his eyes slightly.

"Not at all." I shook my head. "My parents were part of a hate group, my mom probably still is."

He nodded. Some sort of understanding was behind his eyes. I didn't press him on it.

"We're you raised in it, or did they join later?" He pulled a small flask from the pocket of his jacket.

I leaned against the pew. "Raised."

"Do you have any siblings?" He offered me a drink. I denied it.

"Three brothers." I smiled. "They're all older."

Val laughed lightly. "You couldn't have gotten a boyfriend even if you wanted one."

"I wouldn't want it any other way." I sighed. "My parents were hell to be around. I didn't like them before they discovered I was gay. My brothers made it better somehow."

He studied my face. "I'm sorry, this can't be easy to talk about."

I shook my head. "I'm glad I can talk to you, I haven't told Rosa and it's good to figure out what I need to say."

His eyes widened. "You haven't told her?"

I looked down. "I'm afraid she'd leave me, and before you say anything I know how much she loves me and how crazy I sound."

"Mariana or Sofia might call you stupid, but if you don't mind, may I ask why?"

I bit the inside of my cheek. "Have you ever heard of the Westboro Baptist Church?"

I didn't dare lookup. His voice shook slightly as he spoke. "Yes."

I slowly lifted my head. "That's where I was raised."
