Riley POV:
Since the incident, I've been in a better place for a month. Because I didn't want to bother anyone, I insisted on taking care of myself a week after I was released from the hospital. Derek and Meredith volunteered to assist me, which I appreciated, but I didn't want to keep them from their jobs. I regret ordering them to leave me alone, but I appreciate the stillness.
I keep on thinking about what Derek had said a few weeks ago when I said that Meredith wasn't my mom.
"You say that now" Derek's voice plays in the back of her head.
I've returned to school, and things have gone seamlessly for the most part. Due to everyone's conflicting schedules, I haven't seen Derek, Meredith, or the kids in a few weeks, and I must admit that I miss them wholeheartedly.
On our walk home with our pals Rachel and Chris, Jonathan and I come across a car parked on the curb.
Meredith...Meredith Grey...My mother?
I duck my head and hide behind Rachel and she's confused as to what I'm hiding from.
"Dude, isn't that your mom, or Meredith?" Jonathan says
"No."
"You sure about that?" Jonathan raises his eyebrows.
"Damn, your mom is hot!" Chris says
"Wait, but I thought you didn't have parents?" Rachel says
"It's a very long story to tell, very long." I sigh
"She's like a model, holy!" Chris said
What is she doing in this place? Perhaps she's here to apologise profusely for the 1000th time, regardless of the fact that I said we were sort of okay. We don't hang out or call one another because it's incredibly uncomfortable.
She starts honking, trying to get my attention.
"Okay, um... I think I better go, call you later?" I say to Jonathan.
"Have fun with The Grinch" he laughs and mocks me.
I open the passenger door and take a seat.
"Hi," I say softly.
"Hey, how was school?" she asked
"It was good, but um, what exactly are you doing here?" I say confused.
"If you're okay with it, I'd would really like to take you for a ride. We haven't adequately developed a relationship since we met, and I did promise you that I wanted you to be a part of our family, so we're going to hang out today! "she exclaims with great passion
"Are you sure about that? Isn't it obvious that you have to be at work?" I inquire, my voice convulsing.
"Nah. Derek said you're off today, so let's go have some fun! I advised Bailey to tone down my timeframe in the long term so I could devote considerable time to my kids, and Bailey agreed." she beams
In the future? Like permanently?
"Oh. Okay, that sounds cool." whatever she's doing, it's working. I'm starting to adjust to the idea of seeing her more and talking to her. I'm not getting my hopes up yet, but I'm going to remain optimistic for the rest of the day and see where it takes me.
She reaches into the back seat pulling out a huge shopping bag.
"This is for you!" She hands me the whole bag.
"What is this?" I ask
"I went and picked out some clothes for you, some stuff that you like. Derek says you like a lot of sporty stuff...Do you like it?" She asks
