Riley POV:
"You're Mark, aren't you? You're Dad's brother?" I ask
"Not biologically, but yes. We were known as the 'McBrothers'. McDreamy and McSteamy." We all laugh.
"Wow, this is crazy," I said
"You're gonna have to wake up soon, ya know. You can't stay with us forever." Lexie joked
"I wish you guys were with us. You missed out on so much. I'm supposed to be going to college soon." I said
"You've accomplished so much, Riley. You need to keep fighting. People love you, people need you." Mark says
"I'm so exhausted. I feel like I keep dying over and over again. What's the point of living if I'm gonna be hurt again?" I ask
"Riley, there is no life without pain. There's here, but you have your whole life ahead of you. You have so much more to say and to do, you can't leave yet." Lexie says
"I'm not certain that you're wrong. Do you understand how difficult it is to have no one on your side at times? I didn't have many friends until I met my parents. I was fortunate to find Jonathan when I did, but he, too, has disappeared completely! I know my parents love me and all, but those emotions don't go away on their own. That's constantly at the back of my mind. I have been mistreated so many times that I'm not sure how I'm still alive." I grieve.
"Riley, you're free to remain here for a bit, but you must return to your family, okay? This is going to destroy your parents' souls. They're already remorseful for quitting you, and they can't let you go now that they've come to know and love you. You're going to stay here for a while and be at rest, and then you're going to wake up promise?" Mark declares
"Fine. So let's get to know each other while we still can. How did you and Dad first meet?" I asked Mark.
Author POV:
Riley's monitor starts beeping erratically. Meredith wakes up from the chair and is frightened.
"No, please, no!" She cried
Derek started to wake up from all of the disturbance. Miranda, Owen, Alex, and Amelia had rushed into the room.
"Wait. She signed a DNR. She didn't want any extraordinary measures taken." Amelia stops them.
"Are you crazy, we're not going to just let her die!" Derek sits up against his bed.
"Derek, she didn't want you guys to suffer. We shouldn't ignore her decision." Alex said
"That's BS, I'm not letting you guys kill her!" Meredith said and Alex held her back.
They were at a loss for what to do because she was disintegrating. On the one hand, they could save her life without having to go through any hardship. Otherwise, they'd have to say goodbye to their daughter whom they had only known for almost four years. With a shake of her head, Miranda expressed her dissatisfaction with the situation.
"Look at her! Get yourself a crash cart!" Meredith knocked Alex aside and started pumping Riley's chest.
"Are you just going to stand there?" Meredith yelled
"Oh, screw the DNR, hand me the paddles!" Miranda ordered
"Yang, Karev, get her out of here, now! Charge to 250, clear!" she said
They gave her a slew of medicines, including epinephrine, defibrillators, compressions, and the works. Derek had no choice but to sit and wait for her to vanish. He couldn't do anything because he was still recovering from his attempted lifesaving. The monitor continued beeping to remind them that she wasn't alive.
